Composed by Rouget de Lisle in 1792, it is part of the process of affirmation of the idea of nation, it represents one of the first (for some the first) examples of a modern national anthem and has established itself as a model for republican ones, in contrast to the slightly earlier anthem of the British monarchy God Save the King. As a bearer of democratic ideals and textually subversive, it was banned in absolute monarchies and replaced in Napoleonic France, the Restoration and the Second Empire.
