“Non Surrexit Major” is engraved at the top of the broader phrase “Inter natos mulierum, non surrexit major Johanne Baptista” roughly translated as: “among those born of women there will not arise a greater than John the Baptist”.

The church of San Giovanni Battista is a Catholic place of worship located in the municipality of Chiavari, in Piazza San Giovanni Battista, in the metropolitan city of Genoa. The church, sanctuary of the Black Christ, is the seat of the parish of the same name of the vicariate of Chiavari-Lavagna of the diocese of Chiavari.
