La targa che ricorda il presunto battesimo di Cristoforo Colombo a Genova.
Qualche tempo fa, ormai, sono stato in visita alla splendida chiesa di Santo Stefano (quella appena sotto al Ponte Monumentale) che domina la centralissima via XX Settembre.
Nella cripta della chiesa, vicino alla fonte battesimale, c’è questa targa che ricorda il presunto battesimo di Cristoforo Colombo avvenuto proprio in questa chiesa.

“Christophorus Columbus Genuensis
novi orbis repertor
A.D.MCCCCLI ante mensem octubris elapsum
prope hanc ecclesiam
in contrata olivellae natus
eius patre dominico ibi commorante
ad custodiam portae tuttisque
dicti loci deputato
in huius abbatie fonte baptesimatis
sua christiana fides
primim fundamentum habuit.”

The church of Santo Stefano (or abbey of Santo Stefano) is one of the best-known Christian places of worship in Genoa, and its parish community is part of the Vicariate of Carignano – Foce of the Archdiocese of Genoa.
Situated on a hill overlooking the central Via XX Settembre, it was one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in the Ligurian capital.
