The interior of the Cathedral of Sant'Alessandro in Bergamo

The interior of the Cathedral of Sant’Alessandro in Bergamo.
The Cathedral of Sant’Alessandro in Bergamo, located in the upper town, is a magnificent example of Baroque architecture. The interior of the cathedral has a Latin cross plan with a single nave that opens onto six side chapels, three on each side.
The nave is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, which gives a sense of grandeur and solemnity. The side chapels are richly decorated with frescoes and paintings by renowned artists. In the first chapel on the right, dedicated to San Benedetto, there is an altarpiece by Andrea Previtali, depicting San Benedetto da Norcia between San Gerolamo and San Lodovico da Tolosa.
In the right transept is the large Altar of Saints Fermo, Rustico and Procolo, designed by Filippo Juvara. The altar on the left is dedicated to the Madonna della Pietà. The Chapel of the Crucifix houses a 16th-century crucifix from the former Church of Santa Maria di Rosate.
The cathedral houses numerous works of art, including a Madonna dei Colombi attributed to Giovanni Cariani and canvases by Giambettino Cignaroli and Sebastiano Ricci. These masterpieces further enrich the sacred and artistic atmosphere of the place.
Visiting the Cathedral of Sant’Alessandro is an experience that combines spirituality and art, offering an in-depth look at the history and culture of Bergamo. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend exploring this architectural gem.

Here is where the cathedral is located:

The Cathedral of Sant’Alessandro is the main place of Catholic worship in the city of Bergamo, the mother church of the diocese of the same name. It is dedicated to Sant’Alessandro, the patron saint of Bergamo, and is located in the upper city, in Piazza del Duomo, next to the Palazzo della Ragione and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The cathedral, which was born with the devotion to San Vincenzo, changed its title when the Church of Sant’Alessandro, the oldest church in the city dedicated to the saint, the place of his burial, was demolished in 1561 by the Venetians for the construction of the new walls.
