Galleria del Corso: a journey into the heart of Milan
Galleria del Corso: a journey into the heart of Milan.
Located in the heart of Milan, Galleria del Corso is one of the city's most iconic shopping arcades. Built between 1923 and 1931, this arcade is a perfect example of neoclassical and modernist architecture, the work of several architects including Mario Beretta, Ugo Patetta, Livio Cossutti, Eugenio Faludi and Pier Giulio Magistretti.
The idea of building a gallery connecting Corso Vittorio Emanuele II to Piazza Cesare Beccaria dates back to before the First World War. However, construction only began in 1923 and was completed in several stages. The arcade initially housed the Cinema Corso, which opened in 1926, and later the Cinema Teatro, a futuristic structure with a stage with movable floors.
Despite initial criticism for its appearance, considered squat and awkward, Galleria del Corso quickly became a popular place for afternoon and evening strolls, as well as for dining and entertainment. Today, the gallery has been partially restored and houses a hotel and a shopping center, continuing to be a point of reference for residents and tourists.
Visiting the Galleria del Corso means immersing yourself in the history and culture of Milan. Its strategic location, connecting two of the city's main arteries, makes it an ideal place for a relaxing stroll or for shopping. In addition, the gallery offers a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes, making it a perfect destination for anyone who wants to experience the authentic Milanese atmosphere.
