Montefalco is a charming village located in the Umbria region of Italy. This small town is located on a hill, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Umbrian countryside. Known as the “Balcony of Umbria” for its panoramic position, Montefalco is renowned for its history, culture and wine production.
Montefalco has ancient origins, with traces of settlements dating back to Roman times. During the Middle Ages, the city became an important religious and cultural center. The medieval walls and historic gates, such as the Porta di Sant’Agostino, bear witness to the city’s glorious past.
One of the main points of interest is the Church of San Francesco, which today houses the Civic Museum. Here you can admire frescoes of great artistic value, including works by the famous Renaissance painter Benozzo Gozzoli.

Montefalco is famous for its wines, especially Sagrantino di Montefalco, a robust and tannic red wine made from the native grape of the same name. Sagrantino di Montefalco is internationally renowned and is one of Italy’s top wines. In addition to Sagrantino, Montefalco also produces excellent white wines, such as Trebbiano Spoletino.
Local gastronomy is equally renowned, with traditional dishes that include cured meats, cheeses, truffles and high-quality olive oil. Montefalco’s restaurants and trattorias offer an authentic culinary experience, where you can taste Umbrian specialties paired with local wines.

Montefalco hosts numerous events and happenings throughout the year, attracting visitors from all over the world. One of the most important events is the “Settimana Enologica”, held in September and celebrating the grape harvest with wine tastings, cellar tours and folkloristic shows.
The “Fuga del Bove” is another centuries-old tradition, a sort of palio that takes place in August and sees the participation of the four districts of the city in a series of historical and sporting competitions.

The Piazza del Comune, the beating heart of the city, is a charming place to stroll and admire the historic buildings, while the narrow streets and picturesque alleys invite you to explore every corner of the village.
Montefalco is a destination that enchants with its authenticity, the richness of its heritage and the warm welcome of its inhabitants. An ideal place for those who want to immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of Umbria.

Here is where Montefalco is located:

Montefalco is an Italian municipality in the province of Perugia in Umbria. It is the reference point of the wine region where Sagrantino di Montefalco and Montefalco Rosso are produced. The toponym Montefalco is due, according to tradition, to Frederick II of Swabia. The emperor, visiting the places in the 13th century, having noted the large number of falcons, decided to change the name of the place from Coccorone (Cors Coronae) to the current one.

Between the 7th and 8th centuries, following the conquest of Liguria by the Lombards, the Columban monks of Bobbio, who followed the rule of Saint Columbanus and continued their work of evangelization, built a monastery that over time grew to become a religious and economic nerve center. The birth of Brugnato is therefore linked to the foundation of the abbey which, like other monastic sites in Liguria and northern Italy, depended on the abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio.
