The small village of Velva in Liguria

Il piccolo borgo di Velva nell'entroterra della Liguria di Levante

The small village of Velva in the hinterland of Eastern Liguria.
When in the summer on Sunday afternoons I don't want to have to fight for space on the beach I take my scooter and go for a ride inland, perhaps to enjoy some good ravioli with ragù in one of the many trattorias to discover (and review: here).
On one of these trips I stopped, passing through, in the small village of Velva (a hamlet of Castiglione Chiavarese) to take this beautiful photo.
I intended to take more but I never had the chance.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Guard in Velva

Il Santuario di Nostra Signora della Guardia a Velva nell'entroterra di Sestri Levante

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Guard in Velva in the hinterland of Sestri Levante.
Commonly called the Sanctuary of Velva, this church is also very well known in my area for the famous restaurant attached to the sanctuary.
In the photo, in the foreground is the restaurant whose specialties are mushroom sauce and ravioli in abundance!
Very often events are celebrated in the church which then continue in the restaurant!

The construction of a chapel was desired by the population of the hamlet of Velva and expressed their intention to the rector of the parish of San Torpete in Genoa, Monsignor Luigi Persoglio, who stayed in Velva during the summer. The latter suggested the idea of building a sanctuary. The works for the construction of the new place of worship in Velva were entrusted to the architect Maurizio Dufour during the 19th century, who had already created several architectural works in Genoa and Liguria. During the construction, a first wooden group of the Madonna della Guardia by the sculptor Antonio Canepa was made in 1892.

The Hospital of San Nicolao of Pietra Colice

L'area archeologica dell'Ospedale di San Nicolao di Pietra Colice in Liguria

The archaeological area of the Hospital of San Nicolao di Pietra Colice in Liguria.
Some time ago I finally managed to find a companion to walk the path of Monte Nicolao (one of the highest mountains in the area where I live) and, having left the car shortly after the Passo del Bracco, we set off along the beautiful path.
The first and perhaps most interesting stop was certainly when we reached the area of the ancient Hospital for pilgrims who came from the hinterland along this road.
The name of the road was certainly not encouraging: "the road of the brigands".

All photos are here:

Although the immediately superficial layers of the site can be ascribed to the medieval period, the frequentation of the site of San Nicolao dates back to at least 4000 BC, as demonstrated by radiocarbon analyses conducted on the lower layers. In particular, the various excavation campaigns carried out have brought to light, in the southern sector, much earlier deposits.

The view of the Petronio valley from Mount Groppi

La vista sulla valle del Petronio dal Monte Groppi

The view of the Petronio valley from Monte Groppi.
A few months ago I took a splendid path that from the road to the Bracco Pass goes to Monte Nicolao and then, if you want, also climbs up to the top of Monte Groppi which is located on the border between the municipality of Castiglione Chiavarese (GE) and the municipality of Carro (SP).
From there you can enjoy an exceptional view thanks to the 869 meters of the peak!

I'll also leave you a link to a nice article that explains better the path I took: passeggiareinliguria.it.
