The stonemason's portal in Ostuni

Il portale dello scalpellino a Ostuni

The stonemason's portal in Ostuni.
The famous White City of Ostuni also serves some splendid sculpted portals.
One of these, the guide told us, is the one that according to legend was the portal of the workshop of a stonemason who, for marketing purposes as we would say today (or for pride) wanted to have the most beautiful work in the city.
Now there is no longer the workshop but a restaurant.

The most peculiar feature of the historic center, which so fascinated tourists, was the whitewashing of the houses up to the roofs. The use, attested since the Middle Ages, derives, in addition to the easy availability of lime as a raw material, from the need to ensure the narrow streets and narrow spaces of medieval layout greater brightness, given by both direct and reflected light.

A small alley in Ostuni

Un vicoletto di Ostuni

An alley in Ostuni.
One of the characteristic alleys of the town of Ostuni, the White City in Puglia.
Narrow streets, stairs, house doors, shutters: all this is the spectacle that thousands of tourists see when visiting this splendid village that has nothing to envy of other white towns like Mykonos or Ibiza.
It's been a while since I took this image but I like to always keep a few nice ones to publish in "lean" times.

La Concattedrale di Santa Maria ad Ostuni

The Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria in Ostuni.
The beautiful Gothic Co-Cathedral of Ostuni, in Puglia, with its façade (in the first photo) and frescoed ceiling (in the second).
Some time ago now I was in this town in the province of Brindisi; a wonderful city, famous for its houses and streets painted with whitewash (hence the name White City).

A glimpse of Ostuni, the White City

Uno scorcio di Ostuni, la città Bianca

A glimpse of Ostuni, the White City.
If I hadn't written in the title where we are, perhaps you wouldn't have been able to tell me in which village I took this photo, because on the site there are many other images of white streets in Greek or Spanish cities (in particular Mykonos and Ibiza).
Well, to tell the truth in Italy there aren't many famous for their whitewashed walls and streets, and perhaps you would have immediately understood that it is a glimpse of Ostuni, the white city in Puglia, near Brindisi.

Through the white streets of Ostuni

Through the white streets of Ostuni.
Walking through the streets of the historic center of Ostuni, the famous White City, every corner seems like a painting.
It will be the whitewash of the walls, it will be the narrow alleys, it will be the curved streets.
A spectacle for today's tourists, a need for the inhabitants of the past.

The white of the lime used as color on the walls contrasts spectacularly with the blue of the details of this glimpse of the Apulian city.
It seems like you are seeing a Greek street (to tell the truth we are not that far away), don't you think?

The Column of Saint Oronzo in Ostuni

La Colonna di Sant'Oronzo ad Ostuni

The Column of Sant’Oronzo in Ostuni.
In Piazza della Libertà, in the center of the town of Ostuni, stands this 18th century column dedicated to Sant’Oronzo who seems to have protected the town from an epidemic of plague.
Then there are other Saints such as San Biagio, Sant’Agostino, Santa Irene and San Giorgio Armeno.

Sant’Oronzo also hid in a cave in Ostuni, in the place where the church and its Sanctuary were later built. The celebrations take place in the White City on 25, 26 and 27 August with the renowned Cavalcata di Sant’Oronzo, a procession in which members of the clergy and the municipal administration parade, followed by horses and riders, with red fabrics rich in embroidery and sequins

The whitewash, used to keep the houses safe from mold, has given a unique look to this town.

The walls of Ostuni, rebuilt in the late Middle Ages by the Angevins between 1350 and 1356 using the “sacco” construction technique and subsequently expanded towards the south by the Aragonese between 1487 and 1507, based on projects drawn up by architects who came with Alfonso, Duke of Calabria, were largely demolished in the eighteenth century at the behest of the mayors and decurions of those years, unable to repair the damage suffered by the curtain walls and towers, and ended up largely incorporated into private structures.
