Every year in August, the historical reenactment "Addio do Fantin" is held, celebrating the marriage of Opizzo Fieschi and Bianca dei Bianchi, transporting the village back in time with period costumes, music, and flavors.
The basilica is open to the public and can be visited free of charge. It is easily accessible from Chiavari and Lavagna and is an ideal destination for those who love art, history, and spirituality. The Basilica dei Fieschi of San Salvatore.
Also known simply as the Basilica dei Fieschi, it is a magnificent example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture located in the hamlet of San Salvatore, in the municipality of Cogorno, in the metropolitan city of Genoa, Liguria.
The construction of the basilica began in 1244, commissioned by Pope Innocent IV, born Sinibaldo Fieschi, a member of the noble Fieschi family. The decision to erect this place of worship was taken while the Pope was in Genoa, on his way to the Council of Lyon. During the council, the village of Fieschi and the entire county were attacked by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, causing serious damage. The reconstruction work resumed in 1252 and the basilica was consecrated by Pope Adrian V, Ottobuono Fieschi, nephew of Innocent IV.
The Basilica dei Fieschi represents a transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. The structure features Romanesque elements such as the sturdy columns of the central nave and the portal decorated with pillars. At the same time, the altitude of the nave, the pointed arches and the rose window are typical Gothic features. The square bell tower, with mullioned windows, is a peculiar addition that enriches the architecture of the basilica.
The basilica played a crucial role in the development of the territory, serving as a destination for pilgrims heading to Rome along the Via Francigena. In 1860, the beauty and historical importance of the basilica were recognized with its inclusion as a national monument. Today, the Basilica dei Fieschi is considered one of the best preserved Romanesque places of worship in Liguria.
Over the centuries, the basilica has undergone various restorations, including those of the 19th century designed by the architect Maurizio Dufour. Recent conservation efforts in the 1990s have further preserved its historical and architectural integrity.

The Basilica dei Fieschi of San Salvatore, also known as the Basilica dei Fieschi, is an extraordinary example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture located in the hamlet of San Salvatore, in the municipality of Cogorno, near Genoa, in Liguria.
The basilica was built starting in 1244, on the initiative of Innocent IV, born Sinibaldo Fieschi, belonging to the noble Fieschi family. The decision to build this place of worship was taken during the Pope's stay in Genoa, while he was on his way to the Council of Lyon. During the council, the Fieschi village and county suffered an attack by the Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, causing significant damage. Work resumed in 1252 and the basilica was consecrated by Adrian V, Ottobuono Fieschi, nephew of Innocent IV.
The Basilica dei Fieschi represents a fusion between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. San Salvatore di Cogorno is a small town near Lavagna in which the noble Fieschi family expressed its power in the past centuries.
A clear example is the beautiful Basilica.

A monument dedicated to the women who had the hard task of transporting slate slabs from the quarries on the hills down to the valley along the path that is now called the slate path, above San Salvatore di Cogorno.

Slate is widespread in Northern Italy, it has been extracted for many centuries in Liguria, historically in the coastal area between Lavagna (hence the name) and Chiavari. Later also from the quarries of the Fontanabuona valley (behind Chiavari, Rapallo and Genoa) and in the Imperia area (Argentina Valley).

The rose window of the Basilica dei Fieschi in Cogorno.
Some time ago I went to visit and photograph the Basilica dei Fieschi, not far from my house.
In addition to the severe appearance of the interior, the rose window of the facade is beautifully displayed, representing a lamb (agnus in Latin) which has always been one of the symbols of Christianity.
The photo seems to have come out very well, for this reason I proposed it to you in a single post.

Colline dei Fieschi

Colline dei Fieschi.
La Liguria non e’ una terra votata alla vite, sicuramente di piu’ all’ulivo, ma comuqnue ci sono spesso tra le varie colline alcuni filari di piante d’uva.
Questo e’ lo spiazzo che sta di fronte alla Basilica dei Fieschi (a Cogorno) e sicuramente questo appezzamento di terra faceva parte dei possedimenti della antica famiglia nobiliare.
