A very mysterious column in the alley of Chiavari

Una colonna molto misteriosa del caruggio di Chiavari

A very mysterious column in the alley of Chiavari.
In the alley of Chiavari, in Piazza Mazzini, there is this column with a very particular capital that almost certainly belonged to the building, now destroyed and of which only one wall remains, located in Via Rivarola.
It looks like the trigram of Christ IHS with a crown at the top.

A stone skull in front of a church

Un teschio in pietra di fronte ad una chiesa

A stone skull in front of a church.
It always amazes me to find these symbols that are ultimately typical of Christian Catholic symbolism.
This skull is the top of a small column at the entrance to the church of Santa Chiara d'Assisi in Matera, Basilicata.
There is an identical one on the other side and, in fact, even the church door has skulls as decorations. I remind you that the skull is the symbol of the memento mori (remember that you must die), the very concept of earthly death.
On the small stele there is also an hourglass, another Christian symbol that indicates the passage of time.

Here, exactly, is where the church is located:

The memento mori then became popular in Christian painting during the Counter-Reformation in the context of still life. The most typical example is that of a skull placed next to flowers or fruit. It also became the motto of the Trappist monks.

The alleyway of via Bighetti in the center of Chiavari

Il carrugio di via Bighetti a Chiavari

The alley of via Bighetti in the historic center of Chiavari.
The street parallel to the straight alley of Chiavari also has some very beautiful porticos and perhaps even older and more particular.
They are lower in height and darker but at the same time have a more lived-in appearance.

Carrugio di via Bighetti a Chiavari

Alley of Via Bighetti in Chiavari
Chiavari is not just Caruggio Dritto but, on the contrary, many of the most beautiful and original views are in the two streets parallel to it.
One is via Rivarola (let's say towards the sea) and the other is via Bighetti.
Here you can see, in addition to the column in dark stone, I think slate, also the arch in the same material and, in the foreground, the typical tiles that, if you notice, cover many of the sidewalks here in Liguria.
I read somewhere, if I remember correctly, that this geometrically decorated tile is actually called chiavarina because the factory that produced (produced) them was in Chiavari.

Of course if someone could suggest (or correct) something more they can do it by adding a comment.

The Column of Saint Oronzo in Ostuni

La Colonna di Sant'Oronzo ad Ostuni

The Column of Sant’Oronzo in Ostuni.
In Piazza della Libertà, in the center of the town of Ostuni, stands this 18th century column dedicated to Sant’Oronzo who seems to have protected the town from an epidemic of plague.
Then there are other Saints such as San Biagio, Sant’Agostino, Santa Irene and San Giorgio Armeno.

Sant’Oronzo also hid in a cave in Ostuni, in the place where the church and its Sanctuary were later built. The celebrations take place in the White City on 25, 26 and 27 August with the renowned Cavalcata di Sant’Oronzo, a procession in which members of the clergy and the municipal administration parade, followed by horses and riders, with red fabrics rich in embroidery and sequins

The arches and columns of Rivarola street in Chiavari

Gli archi e le colonne di via Rivarola a Chiavari

The arches and columns of Rivarola street in Chiavari.
When we talk about arches and columns, but also about porticos, in Chiavari we always think of the Carrugio Dritto but it is not the only “monumental” street.
Via Rivarola also runs parallel, less frequented but equally rich in very photogenic views and corners.
Seeing is believing.

The architectural system remained unchanged until the late sixteenth century; from that time onwards new noble palaces were built within the walls in the contemporary Renaissance style. The choice of the new architectural style was especially evident in the main streets Ravaschieri and Stefano Rivarola where palaces very similar to other buildings in Genoa were erected or revised.

Slate arches and columns in Chiavari

Archi e colonne in ardesia a Chiavari

Slate arches and columns in Chiavari.
I always enjoy walking through the alleys of Chiavari, there is always a shot waiting for you among the arches and columns.
They are often made of slate and the contrast between the dark of this stone and the bright colors of the houses makes it all incredibly artistic, don't you think?

The Pagoda on a Pylon in Hanoi

La pagoda su un pilone ad Hanoi

The Pagoda on a Pylon in Hanoi.
One of the most famous pagodas in all of Vietnam not for its size but for the fact that it is built on a single column.
It is truly very particular and for this reason it is very visited.
In addition to this, it is close to the Ho Chi Min mausoleum, where his remains are kept, and to his museum.
A place to visit absolutely when visiting the Vietnamese capital.

The columns and arches of the historic center of Chiavari.
Chiavari is certainly the most famous town in the Ligurian Riviera for its porticoed arches.
This, as you can see, is a classic example.
Various columns that support arches of all types; each building has its own style as well as each column and arch.
A spectacle to walk around and photograph.

Where is the square located:

La piazza era conosciuta in passato con il nome di Piano Imperiale; venne allargata e trasformata in piazza durante il rifacimento dell’omonima chiesa avvenuto a partire dal 1640 per dare più ampio respiro alla stessa in funzione delle nuove dimensioni e dell’alta facciata. Al centro della piazza venne posta, in occasione del rifacimento della facciata della chiesa, la colonna dell’Immacolata…
