The dome of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan.
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, located in the heart of Milan, is one of the most iconic and visited places in the city. Built between 1865 and 1877 and designed by the architect Giuseppe Mengoni, the Galleria is a magnificent example of neo-Renaissance architecture and represents one of the first shopping centers in the world.
The Galleria is composed of two arms that intersect to form a cross, with a length of 196 and 105 meters respectively. At the center of this intersection is the majestic dome, which is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating elements of the structure.
The dome of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II rises to a height of 47 meters and has a diameter of 39 meters. Made of glass and iron of French origin, the dome represents a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering and design. At the time of its construction, there were no other glass structures of this size and shape in Europe, making the Galleria a pioneering work of its kind.
Another distinctive element of the dome are the semi-lunettes, painted by artists such as Raffaele Casnedi and Bartolomeo Giuliano. These semi-lunettes allegorically depict the continents (Asia, Europe, Africa and America) and various human activities (art, industry, agriculture and science). Originally frescoed, the semi-lunettes were later covered with mosaics that faithfully reproduce the allegorical motifs.
Since its inauguration, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II has been a meeting point for the Milanese bourgeoisie, so much so that it has been nicknamed the “drawing room of Milan”. Today, the Galleria continues to be a place of great charm, where history, art and architecture blend together in a unique experience for visitors.

Where is the gallery located:
The Galleria, as a privileged seat of Milanese social life and a symbol of modernity, was one of the favorite meeting places and symbolic places of Futurism, interested as it was in the frenetic life of the city. Among the episodes that we can cite of the movement in the Galleria, in addition to the frequent meeting places, we have the arrest of Boccioni, Carrà, Marinetti, Russolo and Piatti after a demonstration in favor of interventionism with the throwing of leaflets, uproar and burning Austrian flags.
