A statue of Saint George and the Dragon in Barcelona

A statue of Saint George and the dragon in Barcelona.
On the back of the Generalitat de Catalunya palace there is this beautiful Gothic decoration that immortalizes Saint George on horseback defeating the dragon.
To tell the truth the statue is a little reworked (the spear is missing and the dragon is almost unrecognizable) but it still has a proud look.
I really enjoy photographing monuments dedicated to this Saint, so loved also in Liguria.

Where is the statue located:

It is said that in a city called Silena, in Libya, there was a large pond, so large that it could hide a dragon, which, approaching the city, killed with its breath all the people it met. The inhabitants offered it two sheep a day to appease it, but when these began to run low, they were forced to offer it a sheep and a young man drawn by lot.

The majestic Palazzo San Giorgio from the Porto Antico

Il maestoso Palazzo San Giorgio di fronte al Porto Antico di Genova

The majestic Palazzo San Giorgio in front of the Porto Antico in Genoa.
The most photographed palace by visitors to the Porto Antico is definitely this one. Located right in front of the entrance to both the alleys of the historic center and the port.
With the beautiful painting on the facade of San Giorgio slaying the dragon.

In the sculpture real and fantastic animals with San Michele with his spear in the center.

Portal of the Church of San Michele in Foro in Lucca. First half of the 12th century. Architrave of the central portal. In the pediment you can see a rich decoration with winged griffins, two-tailed sirens with tails ending in monstrous heads, men with animal bodies, two-headed beasts and beasts that bite other beasts (a clear reference to sin, which can surprise even the most peaceful men at any time).

A bas-relief of San Giorgio in Tellaro

A bas-relief from the church of San Giorgio in Tellaro.
I am always fascinated by representations, in this case a bas-relief, of San Giorgio defeating the dragon.

The inhabitants were terrified when they saw the dragon approaching, but George reassured them, telling them not to be afraid because "God sent me to you to free you from the dragon: if you embrace faith in Christ, you will receive baptism and I will kill the monster". Then the king and the population converted and the knight killed the dragon and had it taken out of the city, dragged by four pairs of oxen.

Bas-relief of San Giorgio in Moneglia

Bassorilievo di San Giorgio a Moneglia

Bas-relief of San Giorgio in Moneglia.
Since this Saint is the protector of Genoa (not the patron saint) throughout Liguria there are many effigies with the classic representation while he pierces the dragon.
I found this bas-relief in the alley of Moneglia, a very pretty village, the last municipality to the east of the province of Genoa.

His red cross on a white field was originally the flag of the Republic of Genoa and therefore he was proclaimed protector of the city of Genoa (while the patron saint is Saint John the Baptist); it was later adopted by many other cities, including Milan and Bologna.

The phoenix on the roof of a building in Hue, Vietnam

Fenice sul tetto a Hue

The phoenix on the roof of a building in Hue, Vietnam.
I really like these statues, which almost always depict mythological animals, and I always photograph them.
This is one of the many in the Imperial city of Hue, in Vietnam, and it depicts a phoenix and below it a dog/dragon.
I tried to search online to see if they have a particular name (like the Gargoils on the roofs of Notre Dam) but I was unable to find anything.
To tell the whole truth, they remind me a lot of the designs and colors of the Mayan statues that I saw in Mexico a few years ago in Coba (even though I know that they have nothing to do with it).

Ceramics are usually composed of different materials: clays, feldspars (sodium, potassium or both), silica sand, iron oxides, alumina and quartz. Such a complex composition determines the presence of flattened molecular structures called phyllosilicates. The shape of these, in the presence of water, gives the clay a certain plasticity and makes it easier and more profitable to work with.
