A monument on the Lisbon waterfront

Un monumento sul lungomare di Lisbona

A monument on the Lisbon waterfront.
Located on the banks of the Tagus River, in the Belém district, the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) is one of Lisbon's most iconic attractions. This imposing monument, inaugurated in 1960, celebrates the great Portuguese maritime explorations of the 15th and 16th centuries and pays homage to key figures of that era, such as Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan.
The 56-metre-high monument represents a giant white stone caravel with sails unfurled, decorated with sculptures of navigators, cartographers, colonisers and other historical figures. Its strategic location on the banks of the Tagus is no coincidence: many of the expeditions that led Portugal to discover new routes and distant lands departed from here.
Visiting the Monument to the Discoveries is a fascinating experience. Climbing to the top, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Belém and the Tagus River. On the lower level, the Discoveries Cultural Center offers permanent and temporary exhibitions that delve into the history of Portuguese exploration.
Don't miss the opportunity to admire the Wind Rose, a huge plaza decorated with multicolored marble tiles that represent the routes discovered by Portuguese navigators. This detail adds a touch of elegance and symbolism to the monument, making it an unmissable place for those visiting Lisbon.

The Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos in Portuguese), located in Belém on the banks of the Tagus River, was built in 1960, five hundred years after the death of Henry the Navigator, to celebrate the age of Portuguese discoveries made by navigators between the 15th and 16th centuries. The monument was begun under the Salazar regime and was intended to celebrate all the sailors who participated in the explorations.

A small boat on the Tagus River in Lisbon.
I haven't been to Lisbon by ship many times and I've even gone out for a little tour.
I have to make do with a few photos I took from the ship like this one of a small sailing boat that ploughs through the waters of the Tagus River estuary right in front of the Portuguese capital.

According to local tradition, in 1478, on the site where the sanctuary stands today, there was a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary. The popular tale states that the Madonna appeared to a mute shepherd boy who, at the sight of the Lady, miraculously regained his speech and then announced the happy event to the people of Montebruno. The inhabitants who flocked to the site of the event found a wooden statue depicting the Virgin on the trunk of a beech tree; today the Marian effigy is placed on the main altar.

The houses on Ponte Vecchio in Florence

Le case su Ponte Vecchio a Firenze

The houses on Ponte Vecchio in Florence
Ponte Vecchio is probably the most famous historic bridge in the world and it is also famous because there are houses built on top of it (and because the Vasari Corridor also passes above the houses).
This is one of the many views of the bridge portrayed from Lungarno.

When you want to photograph the very famous Ponte Vecchio, one of the symbols of Florence, you usually walk along the Arno river and look for the best spot.
In this case I moved to the end of what is called Lungarno degli Archibusieri (that small portico on the right) that from the bridge reaches almost to the Uffizi square.
The three arches of the bridge perhaps deserve a few lines, it is already so famous and well-known.

A beautiful sunset in Hoi An in Vietnam

A beautiful sunset in Hoi An in Vietnam
Uno dei momenti migliori per godersi una passeggiata in questo paesino è il tardo pomeriggio al calare del sole.
Soon the lanterns for which the town is famous will begin to be lit.
But let's stay at sunset: the reddish lights make the already magical atmosphere of this place even more surreal.
Boats ready to transport tourists up and down the river.
Quasi un sogno!

Cat Cat Village in Sa Pa, Vietnam

Cat Cat Village a Sa Pa

Cat Cat village in Sa Pa, Vietnam.
The lowest part of the Vietnamese village of Cat Cat.
One of the most visited places by the many tourists who visit the northern part of the country.
When you enter the village you walk along this narrow and steep street that leads down to the valley where there are these two bridges over the stream and several houses.
There is also a small square where tribal dances and songs are performed daily to entertain tourists and show them how life was a few years ago.

Some river algae on the Gromolo stream

Alghe di fiume

Some river algae on the Gromolo stream.
I really like this image of some algae but at the same time it worries me a bit. The river is the Gromolo and this strange formation was in a waterfall towards Santa Vittoria di Libiola.
Will it all be natural? I don't know…

Algae (from the Latin Algae) belong to a grouping, not belonging to a systematic taxon, represented by organisms of animal structure, autotrophic, unicellular or multicellular, which produce chemical energy by photosynthesis, generating oxygen and which do not present a differentiation into true tissues. Over time, and in the evolution of the scientific systematization of living beings, within this grouping different systematic groups have come to be found with congruent characteristics such as a very simple structure and not differentiated into tissues and very often the photosynthetic capacity. The only green algae or chlorophytes, together with the embryophytes, or terrestrial plants, constitute the clade of green plants, or viridiplantae.
