A monument on the Lisbon waterfront

Un monumento sul lungomare di Lisbona

A monument on the Lisbon waterfront.
Located on the banks of the Tagus River, in the Belém district, the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) is one of Lisbon's most iconic attractions. This imposing monument, inaugurated in 1960, celebrates the great Portuguese maritime explorations of the 15th and 16th centuries and pays homage to key figures of that era, such as Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan.
The 56-metre-high monument represents a giant white stone caravel with sails unfurled, decorated with sculptures of navigators, cartographers, colonisers and other historical figures. Its strategic location on the banks of the Tagus is no coincidence: many of the expeditions that led Portugal to discover new routes and distant lands departed from here.
Visiting the Monument to the Discoveries is a fascinating experience. Climbing to the top, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Belém and the Tagus River. On the lower level, the Discoveries Cultural Center offers permanent and temporary exhibitions that delve into the history of Portuguese exploration.
Don't miss the opportunity to admire the Wind Rose, a huge plaza decorated with multicolored marble tiles that represent the routes discovered by Portuguese navigators. This detail adds a touch of elegance and symbolism to the monument, making it an unmissable place for those visiting Lisbon.

Passing by ship near Cristo Rei

Passing by ship near the Cristo Rei in Lisbon.
When you leave Lisbon by ship and travel along the immense mouth of the Tagus River, you have to pass under the famous bridge called Ponte 25 de Abril which is located a short distance from perhaps the most famous monument in Lisbon: the Cristo Rei.
Here, on board the ex Costa Firenze a few years ago, I took some photos just as the ship passed under the bridge.

Here is where the bridge and the Christ are located:

The National Sanctuary of Christ the King or simply Christ the King is a Portuguese sanctuary located in Pragal, a former friary of the city of Almada, which in turn is part of Greater Lisbon. It is famous because behind it is a colossal statue of Christ the King, inspired by the Christ of Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, designed by the architect António Lino, built by Francisco Franco de Sousa and inaugurated on May 17, 1959. The base of the statue is shaped like a door and is 75 meters high and above it is the 28-meter statue of Christ the King.

Like these murals on a half-abandoned house.

Cristo Rei, the statue in front of Lisbon

Il Cristo Rei, la statua simbolo di Lisbona

Cristo Rei, the statue in front of Lisbon.
Cristo Rei of Lisbon is a statue of Jesus Christ that stands on the south bank of the Tagus River, in the city of Almada, in front of Lisbon.
The Cristo Rei statue is approximately 110 meters tall, with the statue itself measuring approximately 28 meters. Its construction was inspired by the Cristo Redentor statue in Rio de Janeiro.
The statue is located on Monte Cristo Rei, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge.
Construction of the statue began in 1950 and was completed in 1959. It was erected as a thank you for Portugal having managed to avoid participation in World War II.
The Cristo Rei statue symbolizes gratitude for divine protection during the war and also serves as a symbol of peace.
This statue has become an icon of Lisbon and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the region. In addition to offering a breathtaking view, the area around the statue also hosts places of worship and a sanctuary.

I have to make do with a few photos I took from the ship like this one of a small sailing boat that ploughs through the waters of the Tagus River estuary right in front of the Portuguese capital.

During the navigation you can notice many symbols of the Portuguese capital such as Christ the Redeemer, the 25th April Bridge and also the Monument to the Discoveries (of which I am posting photos today).
Dedicated to the many who set sail between the 15th and 16th centuries, the years of the explosion of European seafaring.
