The Last Supper by Tintoretto preserved in the cathedral of Lucca.
Among the many examples of art preserved in the splendid Cathedral of Lucca, San Martino, this painting by the famous Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti) certainly stands out.
Of exquisite beauty, it shows Jesus participating in the Last Supper with his Apostles.

One of Tintoretto's last masterpieces, created with the help of his son Domenico. A canvas that contains all the characteristic and innovative features of this extraordinary artist: the oblique panel to create depth, the scene updated in a tavern with two servants and centered on Christ who communicates with the apostles and emanates a light so strong that it makes the clouds open among the angels who rush in.

The painting “Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints” by Ghirlandaio in Lucca.
In Italy we are so used to meeting and observing works of art that we almost don’t even notice them anymore.
A few years ago, for example, I spent a couple of days in Lucca and while visiting the cathedral of San Martino I photographed this beautiful work by Ghirlandaio.
Perhaps not his most famous work but still a masterpiece!

Famous for its historical monuments, it is one of the few provincial capitals to preserve the historic center, rich in ancient structures from various eras, completely surrounded by a sixteenth-century wall that is intact and almost unchanged over the centuries. It is a notable city of art in Italy.

Here is where the church is located:

Si racconta che dopo la morte, alcune persone tentarono di appropriarsi del corpo per allontanarlo dal cimitero di San Michele, ma San Davino si oppose. Esattamente provarono a tirarlo per il dito medio che si ritirò, motivo per cui sarebbe rimasto piegato. Il suo braccio è ancora rigido perché lui non voleva riposare per sempre in San Michele in Foro.

The statue of San Martino on the facade of the cathedral of Lucca.
If you are planning a trip to Lucca you absolutely cannot miss a visit to its cathedral.
The church is dedicated to San Martino who is “immortalized” in the statue on the facade.
The iconic scene of the Saint sharing his cloak with a beggar.
I wanted to remind you that the cathedral of Lucca has been one of the most visited by pilgrims for centuries.

As a circitor, his task was to patrol at night and inspect guard posts, as well as to supervise the garrisons at night. During one of these patrols, the episode that changed his life occurred (and which is still the one most remembered and used in iconography today). In the harsh winter of 335, Martin met a half-naked beggar. Seeing him in pain, he cut his military cloak (the white chlamys of the imperial guard) in two and shared it with the beggar.

The city of Lucca seen from the bell tower of the Cathedral.
On my last visit to the splendid Tuscan city of Lucca, now several months ago, I managed to climb to the top of the bell tower of the Cathedral and take several photos of the roofs and the various famous towers of the city.
In fact, you can clearly see the famous Guinigi Tower with the famous centuries-old holm oaks at the top.

The calendar and the inscription on the Cathedral of Lucca

The calendar and the inscription for pilgrims on the Cathedral of Lucca.
On the rich facade of San Martino, the Cathedral of Lucca, there are many bas-reliefs and inscriptions.
One of these represents the months of the year and the typical actions of the period represented (such as putting wine in barrels in October).
Further down there is a long inscription which, if I am not mistaken, is a kind of guarantee for pilgrims that they will not be cheated during the visit to the Holy Face.

The inscription that the apothecaries and money changers had engraved and positioned, in which they pledged not to cheat in the exchange of money and not to counterfeit the products sold to pilgrims. The inscription is from 1111 and these are some significant passages: "(...) All the apothecaries and money changers swear that from that moment on they would not commit thefts, frauds or forgeries within the court of San Martino or in the houses where hospitality is given" and concludes "(...) Every foreigner should read this inscription in this trust and fear nothing for himself".

The main façade, oriented towards the west, is supported by the portico-narthex opening onto the square by three large arches, one of which is narrower due to the proximity of the pre-existing bell tower. Guidetto and his collaborators created bas-reliefs with the martyrdom of Saint Regolo depicted in the lunette above the entrance to the right nave, a cycle of the months and stories of Saint Martin.
