Alley of the House of Mazzini in the historic center of Genoa

Vico Casa di Mazzini nel centro storico di Genova

Vico Casa di Mazzini in the historic center of Genoa.
Just behind the Museum of the Risorgimento, where the birthplace of Giuseppe Mazzini is located, there is this small alley (which connects via Lomellini with via Cairoli) closed by a gate.

Here's where the alley is located:

The Museo del Risorgimento – Istituto Mazziniano is a museum complex in Genoa, established in 1934, entirely dedicated to the events of the Italian Risorgimento and, in particular, to some leading figures of that specific moment in Italian history closely linked to the Ligurian capital, such as Giuseppe Mazzini, Giuseppe Garibaldi and Goffredo Mameli, author of the Canto degli Italiani, the Italian national anthem. Located in via Lomellini 11, it is housed in the ancient Palazzo Adorno (15th century), in what was the birthplace of Mazzini; it was restored in 2005 and reopened to the public to coincide with the bicentenary of the birth of the great thinker.

Here's where the square is located:

Giuseppe Mazzini (Genoa, 22 June 1805 – Pisa, 10 March 1872) was an Italian patriot, politician, philosopher and journalist. A leading exponent of Risorgimento patriotism, his ideas and political action contributed decisively to the formation of the unified Italian State; the sentences he received in various Italian courts, however, forced him to remain in hiding until his death because he was a staunch supporter of the republican institution against the Savoy monarchy.

Walking through the historic center of Chiavari and along the famous Caruggio Dritto at a certain point the street opens onto this beautiful square in the center of which is the beautiful statue dedicated to one of the fathers of the Italian Risorgimento: Giuseppe Mazzini (whose family was originally from Chiavari).
With the beautiful Palazzo di Giustizia (formerly the courthouse) behind it, one of the classic photos of the coastal city.

The architectural layout remained unchanged until the late sixteenth century; from that time onwards new noble palaces were built within the walls in the contemporary Renaissance style. The choice of the new architectural style was especially evident in the main streets Ravaschieri and Stefano Rivarola where palaces very similar to other buildings in Genoa were erected or revised. From 1648, or perhaps from 1646, it received the title of City from the Republic of Genoa.

Some time ago, from the Christmas lights that decorate the square you can understand when I took the photo, I was walking around Piazza Mazzini in Chiavari; the Piazza dei coi (cabbages) as it is also called by the people of Chiavari because in the morning the fruit and vegetable market takes place there.

I really like the buildings that surround it, what about you? Add a comment or go to the bottom of the site to read what other visitors have written.

The beautiful alley of the city of Rapallo in Liguria

Il caruggio di Rapallo

The beautiful alleyway of the city of Rapallo in Liguria.
The beautiful town of Rapallo has in its center, like practically all Ligurian villages, its beautiful straight alleyway (or carrugio or carruggio) where the most beautiful shops are located and people take a stroll up and down on non-summer afternoons.
Everyone calls it an alleyway but the correct toponym is via Giuseppe Mazzini.

Caruggio or Carruggio, (a word that in the “official spelling” of Genoese should be written (Caroggio and pronounced Caruggiu, because in Ligurian the O is pronounced U), is the term used to indicate a street or alley, even a portico, typical of Ligurian historic centers. The term derives from the Latin quadrivium, or from the more popular quadruvium.

Palace of Justice. The building, which housed the Chiavari court until 2013, is located in the heart of the historic center of Chiavari in Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini. Built in 1886 and designed by Giuseppe Partini, it is in medieval style with forms inspired by Tuscan Gothic. It was erected on the site of the ancient “Cittadella” of the fifteenth century, built by the Republic of Genoa as a concentration of civil and military power, of which the crenellated tower from 1537 is still visible.

Piazza Mazzini!).
