The snow-capped Maritime Alps seen from Sestri Levante

The snow-capped Maritime Alps seen from Sestri Levante.
On particularly clear and cold days (I have had this photo in my archive for a long time and I really don't think the day I'm posting it was that cold) from my Sestri Levante you can see the Maritime Alps, those on the border between Italy and France, very well.
Obviously to photograph them you need a good telephoto lens!

The Maritime Alps are a section of the Alpine chain located in the Western Alps. According to the Partition of the Alps, they are the Alpine section that extends between the Tenda pass and the Cadibona pass. According to the SOIUSA, however, they constitute a subsection included in the section "Maritime Alps and Prealps of Nice" and extend from the Tenda pass to the Maddalena pass.

The snow-capped Maritime Alps seen from Mount Zatta

Le Alpi Marittime innevate viste dal Monte Zatta

The snow-capped Maritime Alps seen from Monte Zatta.
One of the most beautiful paths I remember walking is definitely the Zatta ring.
Coming down from the ridge, along the way back, you look towards the West and, on a day like the one I had been on, you could see the snow-capped peaks of the Alps very well (here in the photo I think they are the Maritime ones).

I took several photos along the Monte Zatta path and if you want to see them go to this page:

To see in detail the path I took I invite you to go to wikiloc.com.

The summit of the Zatta mountain massif consists of a long wavy ridge, crossed by an easy ridge path. On the outer edges of this ridge are the Zatta di Ponente mountain (1355 m) and the Prato Pinello mountain (1390 m). Between the two ends rises the main peak, the Zatta di Levante mountain (1404 m). The southern slope is steep and stony, while the northern slope, towards the Bocco pass, has a gentler slope and is covered by a large beech forest.

The Centocroci Pass (Sentu Cruxe in Ligurian) is a mountain pass located at an altitude of 1055 metres above sea level that separates the Val di Vara from Emilia, opening onto the ridge a few kilometres north-west of Mount Gottero, in the Ligurian Apennines.

Cows on the snow of Centocroci Pass

Le mucche sulla neve del Passo di Centocroci

Cows in the snow at Passo di Centocroci.
Last winter I had already been to Passo di Centocroci (which divides Liguria from Emilia Romagna) for a little trip in the snow.
Luckily there was still a lot of it, or at least enough to take many photos.
Like this one in which you can see some cows, outside the stable,
warming themselves under a pale winter sun.

The name of the Passo di Cento Croci is to be found among various popular stories, legends and beliefs. Among the ancient stories, the best known is the one that recalls a band of brigands that operated along the Apennine ridge and that would have killed, during its ferocious raids, more than one hundred wayfarers: hence the corresponding one hundred crosses placed as a warning and remained in the name of the pass.

La neve a Centocroci lo scorso inverno

Snow at Passo Centocroci last winter.
Last winter, after a very long time, I went for a walk in the snow.
Thanks to a nice snowfall we went (with some friends) to the Centocroci pass near Varese Ligure.
Lots of snow and photos with white as the protagonist!

The snow-capped Maritime Alps seen from Sestri Levante.
When the weather conditions are right, it is easy, even from our Sestri Levante, to see the Maritime Alps.
A few days ago this is what you could see, obviously with a bit of a telephoto lens, even from the seaside promenade along the Baia delle Favole!

Snow at Centocroci Pass last January

La neve al Passo di Centocroci lo scorso gennaio

Snow at the Centocroci Pass last January.
When I went on a “trip” to the Centocroci Pass (which connects Liguria and Emilia Romagna) last January, I took lots of photos of the snow.
To tell the truth, at this altitude, snow falls almost every year here, but last January it really fell in a lot and, thanks to the yellow color of that weekend, we set off.
In an hour's drive from Sestri Levante, taking the state road that passes through San Pietro Vara and then Varese Ligure, you get to the Pass.
The view was decidedly “white” and wonderful.

The frozen snow left in Centocroci

La neve ghiacciata rimasta a Centocroci

The frozen snow left in Centocroci.
I finally managed to start posting photos of my little trip to the Centocroci Pass a few weeks ago.
In addition to the great snowy panorama that I have already shown you with photos from the drone and that I will soon show you with photos, I also managed to take some special photos of the snow and ice.
Like on this pole on which, on the side covered by the sun, there was still some frozen snow left.
The background of the wind turbines is beautiful!

Don't these look like nice shots to you too?

Quando un paio di settimane fa sono stato anch’io, come molti liguri, a fare due passi e due foto sulla neve sono rimasto molto impressionato dal ghiaccio e dalla neve che grazie al lavoro del vento si è solidificata con questa forma particolare.
