The central portal of the Cathedral of Assisi.
Although the most famous church in Assisi is certainly the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi, the cathedral of the city is San Rufino.
In this photo you can see the richly decorated central portal.

In this case, walking through the Norwegian town of Alesund, I saw this keystone of an ancient portal and it immediately caught my attention.

The Labours of Hercules at Palazzo Gio Batta Spinola

Le Fatiche di Ercole a Palazzo Gio Batta Spinola

The Labors of Hercules at Palazzo Gio Batta Spinola.
In the heart of Genoa, on Via degli Orefici, is one of the most fascinating portals in the city: The Labors of Hercules at Palazzo Gio Batta Spinola. This sixteenth-century portal, attributed to the master Giacomo Della Porta, is a true masterpiece of sculpture and symbolism.
The portal is decorated with two imposing telamons that rest on monstrous heads: a leonine one and a snarling human one. On the left, a bearded Hercules, wrapped in the skin of the Nemean lion, holds his famous club, obtained from a wild olive tree from Mount Helicon. On the right, a hairless farmer with a relaxed face, also with a club in his hand. At the base of the telamons, two reliefs depict Hercules: one seated with the club and the other in full combat with a lion.
The metopes of the portal feature helmets with screaming heads, clipei and bucrania alternating with corbel triglyphs. In the center, the enigmatic head of winged Medusa stands out. On the entablature, two elegant female figures with drapes and amphorae at the sides frame a moustached mask, placed to replace the original family crest, removed during the Napoleonic period.
This portal is not only an example of artistic mastery, but also a symbol of the rich history of Genoa and its traditions. Walking along Via degli Orefici, one cannot help but admire this hidden treasure, which tells stories of mythological heroes and a glorious past.

The aedicule is a relatively small architectural structure, with the practical function of housing and protecting the element placed therein. The term derives from the Latin aedicula, diminutive of aedes (“temple”) and therefore with the original meaning of “small temple”. Originally it was a miniature temple, which housed the statue or the representation of a deity, and a typical example could be the domestic lararium.

The climb named after Alessio Levaggi in Chiavari

La salita intitolata ad Alessio Levaggi a Chiavari

The climb named after Alessio Levaggi in Chiavari.
A beautiful little street in Chiavari, near the church of Rupinaro, dedicated to the esteemed doctor Andrea Lavaggi (who I previously wrote was a craftsman who with his brothers created the company that produces the Sedia di Chiavarina) with this beautiful entrance portal to a beautiful villa.
Unfortunately I was unable to find anything about this entrance online.

Update: as Gian writes to me in comment “Alessio Lavaggi was a doctor who died in 1966. The portal belonged to the Falcone-Marana palace.”

Located in the market square of San Giorgio, it is owned by the Vento and Cattaneo Della Volta families (1414); included in the rolli since 1599, it changed its name when Elianetta Baxadonne left it as an inheritance to her son Gio Andrea De Franchi Toso (1616), already a senator of the Republic of Genoa.

A detail of one of the portals of the Milan Cathedral.
Leaving the visit of the Cathedral I was fascinated by the bronze door (the 5 o'clock door) which depicts the works of Sant'Ambrogio, the patron saint of the Milanese city, created by the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni.

The portal of Palazzo Lorenzo Cattaneo in Genoa

Il portale di Palazzo Lorenzo Cattaneo nel centro storico di Genova

The portal of Palazzo Lorenzo Cattaneo in the historic center of Genoa.
Getting lost in the alleys of the historic center of Genoa is almost always a way to discover hidden and ever new beauties.
Like that day when I was walking and I happened upon this beautiful palace, which I discovered was registered in the list of the Rolli, whose decorated door immediately attracted my attention.
Even then, a few weeks after I photographed it, I found it as the setting (even if the interior I discovered was not the real one of the palace) of an episode of the beautiful Rai TV series called Blanca.

The entrance portal to the palace, created by the Lombard sculptor Antonio della Porta, known as Tamagnino, in 1504. The work reflects the originality of Cattaneo, certainly unique in the Genoese context both for the importance of the client and for the originality of the structure and decoration, which constitutes one of the greatest examples of the Renaissance in Genoa that have come down to us.

Portal of the Church of San Michele in Foro in Lucca. First half of the 12th century. Architrave of the central portal. In the pediment you can see a rich decoration with winged griffins, two-tailed sirens with tails ending in monstrous heads, men with animal bodies, two-headed beasts and beasts that bite other beasts (a clear reference to sin, which can surprise even the most peaceful men at any time).
