The large churchyard of Santo Stefano in Lavagna.
The churchyard of the Basilica of Santo Stefano in Lavagna is famous for its beautiful risseu, mosaics made from black and white pebbles arranged in geometric patterns. The basilica itself, located in the town of Lavagna in Liguria, is an imposing structure that dominates the town and the surrounding sea.
The Basilica of Santo Stefano in Lavagna has a fascinating history that dates back many centuries. The first mention of a religious building on the site dates back to the 6th century, although some sources suggest it may be even older. Originally, there was a signal tower for sailors on the site, next to which the first church was built.
Over the centuries, the basilica has undergone numerous changes and restorations. In 1060, it was elevated to a collegiate church and became an important ecclesiastical center under the protection of the Holy See of Rome. The noble Fieschi family, who dominated the region, always had a special regard for the church, considering it a religious reference point of their dominion.
The current structure of the basilica was completed in 1668, with the consecration taking place in 1703. In 1921, Pope Benedict XV elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica.
The basilica is also known for its richly decorated interior and for the churchyard with the characteristic black and white pebble mosaics, typical of the Ligurian tradition.

Where is the cathedral located:

The cathedral was built between 1151 and 1227 on the site of a pre-existing building; it was part of the Vaita De Domo. It was consecrated by Pope Innocent III in 1198. Inside, in the apse, there is the valuable cycle of frescoes by Filippo Lippi Stories of the Virgin, painted in the last years of the artist's life, between May 1467 and September 1469.

I always really like risseu, that particular decorative art that consists of placing river or sea pebbles (almost always black and white) to create a design.
In this case it is the decoration of the churchyard of the church of San Giovanni Battista in the small village of Mattarana in the province of La Spezia.

Not far from where I live is this beautiful little church dedicated to San Bartolomeo. The area is called “della Ginestra” because I imagine, on the small mountain behind it there were many broom plants.

According to some historical sources, it is believed that a pre-existing place of worship may have been built in a period between the 11th and 12th centuries, in the vicinity of the locality “Zenestra” (hence the current toponym “Ginestra”), included in the parish jurisdiction of the church of Santo Stefano del Ponte.

The risseu churchyard of the church of Santa Margherita di Antioca in Sori.
I haven't been to Sori, the beautiful tourist resort on the Riviera di Levante, very often, but I've stopped there a couple of times recently.
This is the beautiful little square in front of the church of Santa Margherita, whose paving is made with the technique, very popular in Liguria, of sirreu (black and white sea pebbles that create a design).
If I'm not mistaken, the design created is the coat of arms of the municipality of Sori.

The original religious temple was built around the 12th century, perhaps in Romanesque style, and was large enough for its population. From 1143, it was subject, like other religious buildings in the area, to the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo di Pieve Ligure. The structure was rebuilt between 1711 and 1714 based on a design by the architect Giovanni Antonio Ricca (the Younger), while work on raising the tall bell tower began on 15 April 1740.

The Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante seen from the churchyard of the Capuchin friars' convent on 9 May 2023.
The splendid bay that is the symbol of my town is certainly one of my favourite subjects.
When last May I wanted to do some tests with my old ef lens, I went all the way to the churchyard of the Capuchin friary, one of the best places to photograph the Bay.
Even the swimming pool of the Hotel Helvetia has its charm!

I really like taking photos in the area of the Basilica of Santo Stefano in Lavagna. In addition to the splendid churchyard (which I have photographed many times) and the beautiful Brignardello portico, in this shot I photographed the street that passes through the square, via Dante Alighieri, from the terrace that is built above the portico itself.
