The porticos and the Basilica of Santo Stefano in via Venti. When I walk along via Venti Settembre in Genoa, passing under the porticos on the sea side (let's say) the view always takes in the beautiful Basilica of Santo Stefano and the porticos that "support" it. The charm of the two-tone style perhaps embellishes the view.

The church of Santo Stefano (or abbey of Santo Stefano) is one of the most famous Christian places of worship in Genoa, and its parish community is part of the Vicariate of Carignano – Foce of the archdiocese of Genoa. Situated on a hill overlooking the central Via XX Settembre, it was one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in the Ligurian capital. Christopher Columbus was baptized in this church and it is believed that the young Balilla was also baptized. Continue and learn more on Wikipedia

The large churchyard of Santo Stefano in Lavagna. The churchyard of the Basilica of Santo Stefano in Lavagna is famous for its beautiful risseu, mosaics made from black and white pebbles arranged in geometric patterns. The basilica itself, located in the town of Lavagna in Liguria, is an imposing structure that dominates the town and the surrounding sea. The Basilica of Santo Stefano in Lavagna has a fascinating history that dates back many centuries. The first mention of a religious building on the site dates back to the 6th century, although some sources suggest it may be even older. Originally, there was a signal tower for sailors on the site, next to which the first church was built. Over the centuries, the basilica has undergone numerous changes and restorations. In 1060, it was elevated to a collegiate church and became an important ecclesiastical center under the protection of the Holy See of Rome. The noble Fieschi family, who dominated the region, always had a special regard for the church, considering it a religious reference point of their dominion. The current structure of the basilica was completed in 1668, with the consecration taking place in 1703. In 1921, Pope Benedict XV elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica. The basilica is also known for its richly decorated interior and for the churchyard with the characteristic black and white pebble mosaics, typical of the Ligurian tradition.

The plaque commemorating the alleged baptism of Christopher Columbus in Genoa. Some time ago now, I visited the splendid church of Santo Stefano (the one just under the Monumental Bridge) which dominates the central Via XX Settembre. In the crypt of the church, near the baptismal font, there is this plaque commemorating the alleged baptism of Christopher Columbus which took place in this very church.
“Christophorus Columbus Genuensis novi orbis repertor A.D.MCCCCLI ante mensem octubris elapsum prope hanc ecclesiam in contrata olivellae natus eius patre dominico ibi commorante ad custodiam portae tuttisque dicti loci deputato in huius abbatie fonte baptesimatis sua christiana fides primim fundamentum habuit.”

The High Altar of the Church of Santo Stefano in Genoa. Many times I have been on the large terrace of this church to photograph via XX Settembre from above but very few times have I managed to enter this church. Some time ago, taking advantage of the event “Le chiese dei Rolli”, I was able to visit it and I was fascinated by it. The interior is very sparse but colossal.

The risseu of the churchyard of the Basilica of Santo Stefano in Lavagna. The beautiful basilica of Lavagna has a splendid churchyard, the part closest to which, the part closest to the church, is decorated entirely with the very typical risseu (the pebbles usually white and black) with geometric and regular embroidery.

The material available in different areas has influenced in the past the laying techniques and the possibility of also creating decorations, based on the shapes and colors of the available stone elements. In the alluvial plains, rounded pebbles taken from riverbeds are preferred; near the sea, pebbles with a lenticular morphology, taken from the beaches, are preferred; in the mountains, elongated pebbles from streams. The ancient crypt of the ancient church of Santo Stefano in Genoa. Last year, right around Christmas time, I managed (almost by chance) to find out about the possibility of visiting some beautiful churches in Genoa with the same organization as the Rolli Days. One of the churches I saw, and whose crypt I've posted two photos of below, is the beautiful church of Santo Stefano that dominates Via Venti Settembre just near the Ponte Monumentale. One of the most famous in the city where it is said Christopher Columbus was even baptized.

The Pieve di Santo Stefano, a small and beautiful church in Rapallo. One of the most beautiful churches in the coastal town of Rapallo is certainly the Pieve di Santo Stefano which I photographed here from the gate that delimits its entrance (and which was closed that day). Together with the little church, you can see what I thought was the bell tower which is actually the civic tower of the city.

The Brignardello portico on the parvis of the Basilica of Santo Stefano in Lavagna. One of the most photographed places in Lavagna is certainly the parvis of the largest church in the city: Santo Stefano. On two sides there are houses while on the right side there is this beautiful and large loggia from which you can access the monumental cemetery. A special feature is that you can climb onto the roof of the portico and take photos from an unusual perspective.

In 1897, the last decorative interventions in the square saw the construction of the marble loggia – known as the Bignardello portico – which thus allowed access, without passing in front of the church, to the monumental cemetery located behind the religious structure. Buildings on Twenty September street in Genoa seen from the churchyard of Santo Stefano. Whenever I can, when I find myself on Via XX, I go up to the church of Santo Stefano for a moment to photograph the street and the buildings from above. Not everyone knows that going up Via XX, just after the Monumental Bridge, there is a small staircase (which does not promise anything good) that leads to the splendid church of Santo Stefano and to the churchyard which in reality is nothing more than a terrace on the main street.
