Every time I travel along the Via Aurelia I stop for a moment at the Santuario delle Grazie to enjoy the splendid view of the city of Chiavari and the Gulf of Tigullio di Levante.

Here is where the Sanctuary is located:

The sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Grazie is a Catholic place of worship located in the town of Grazie in the municipality of Chiavari, in the metropolitan city of Genoa. The building is located along the state road 1 Via Aurelia, in a stretch where the coast rises steeply above the sea, with a wooded slope. The sanctuary dominates the sea, and is still clearly visible to sailors today as in the past.

Chiavari and Lavagna seen from the heights to the East and West.
In this post I have collected some photos taken from the heights.
The first two are taken from the area to the East and more precisely from the area of Santa Giulia. The third photo was taken from the Grazie.

The frescoes inside the Santuario delle Grazie in Chiavari.
One of the most beautiful little churches in the whole Tigullio in my opinion. It is located just above Chiavari along the Aurelia towards Rapallo.
Inside are the splendid frescoes by Teramo Piaggio; more famous is the fresco of the Last Judgement by Luca Cambiaso on the counter-façade (behind this photo).

This, instead, is a nice video of the frescoes:

According to in-depth studies on the current structure, the various phases that led to the architectural evolution of the building followed a precise and logical choice of "aggregation", in the sense that the structure underwent various modifications over the centuries without the classic method of "superposition", a common phenomenon of other religious buildings in the Chiavari area and in the Ligurian territory, especially in the Baroque reinterpretations.

The view of Chiavari from the Santuario delle Grazie.
One of the best places to photograph Chiavai is from the Santuario delle Grazie (on the road to Rapallo).
To tell the truth, I had been there once before and the trees did not allow the view which, as you can see, is splendid from there.

The view of Chiavari, Lavagna and the coast coming down from the Aurelia.
Arriving from Rapallo, once you have passed the Santuario delle Grazie, a spectacular view opens up (to tell the truth only in a couple of places) of Chiavari, first of all, but also Lavagna and its little port and the whole coast up to Sestri Levante.
Let's also add the sunset light and the show is served!

The Colonia Fara of Chiavari dalle Grazie at sunset.
A few months ago, returning from Genoa, I exited the highway at Rapallo to take a stretch of the Aurelia that I hadn't traveled for a long time.
Just after the Santuario delle Grazie there is a place where you can leave the car and take some photos, from above, of the splendid Chiavari.
In these three shots the Ex Colonia Fara kissed by a September sun at sunset.

The Ex Colonia Fara also has an official website: torrefara.com.

The Fara colony, renamed Fara tower, is an Italian civil building in Chiavari. Born as a summer colony in the fascist era, it served as a youth hotel after the war and was gradually abandoned and decayed.

The interior of the Sanctuary of Graces

The interior of the Santuario delle Grazie.
I had never been to the church of the Grazie, above Chiavari, and I must say that it is truly a splendid example of Ligurian art.
Its beautiful frescoes (by Teramo Piaggio and Luca Cambiaso) in addition to the hundreds of ex votos present in the chapel in front of the main entrance.

The trail to the Sanctuary of Montallegro in Rapallo.
In recent weeks, like many others, I have become a lover of trekking.
I am lucky that in my area, the Ligurian Tigullio, there are many beautiful trails to hike.
So last week I went, together with some friends, to do the one that starts from Chiavari, passes by the Sanctuary of Grazie, goes to the Sanctuary of Montallegro and then ends in Rapallo.
A really nice ride of about 15 kilometers with some stretches (especially the initial one) that are really tough.
I'll leave you just a couple of photos here: the first is of the road that goes from Montallegro to Rapallo and that I took downhill; the second is of one of the many stretches of the trail.
