The Sanctuary of San Bernardino alle Ossa in Milan. It is a fascinating place full of history. Located in the city center, near the famous Piazza del Duomo, the sanctuary is best known for its ossuary chapel. The ossuary was built in 1210 to address the lack of space in the local cemetery. The bones of the deceased were collected and artistically arranged along the walls, creating a unique and disturbing atmosphere. The current chapel was then rebuilt in 1695, after being destroyed by a fire. The interior of the sanctuary is decorated with splendid frescoes by Sebastiano Ricci, a famous Venetian painter of the 17th century. These frescoes represent scenes from the lives of the saints and further enrich the evocative atmosphere of the place. The peculiarity of the sanctuary is also given by the high altar, made of marble and decorated with statues of angels and saints. Visiting the Sanctuary of San Bernardino alle Ossa is an experience that leaves its mark. The combination of history, art and the macabre charm of the ossuary make this place an unmissable attraction for anyone in Milan.

Cristo Rei, the statue in front of Lisbon. Cristo Rei of Lisbon is a statue of Jesus Christ that stands on the south bank of the Tagus River, in the city of Almada, in front of Lisbon. The Cristo Rei statue is approximately 110 meters tall, with the statue itself measuring approximately 28 meters. Its construction was inspired by the Cristo Redentor statue in Rio de Janeiro. The statue is located on Monte Cristo Rei, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge. Construction of the statue began in 1950 and was completed in 1959. It was erected as a thank you for Portugal having managed to avoid participation in World War II. The Cristo Rei statue symbolizes gratitude for divine protection during the war and also serves as a symbol of peace. This statue has become an icon of Lisbon and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the region. In addition to offering a breathtaking view, the area around the statue also hosts places of worship and a sanctuary.

The view of Chiavari and the Gulf of Tigullio di Levante from the Santuario delle Grazie. Some time ago, returning from Genoa along the Via Aurelia, I stopped at the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie to admire and photograph the beautiful city of Chiavari from one of the most panoramic points there is. I didn't have a telephoto lens but a 50mm fixed but the quality of the shots seemed good to me!

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Guard in Velva in the hinterland of Sestri Levante. Commonly called the Sanctuary of Velva, this church is also very well known in my area for the famous restaurant attached to the sanctuary. In the photo, in the foreground is the restaurant whose specialties are mushroom sauce and ravioli in abundance! Very often events are celebrated in the church which then continue in the restaurant!

The construction of a chapel was desired by the population of the hamlet of Velva and expressed their intention to the rector of the parish of San Torpete in Genoa, Monsignor Luigi Persoglio, who stayed in Velva during the summer. The latter suggested the idea of building a sanctuary. The works for the construction of the new place of worship in Velva were entrusted to the architect Maurizio Dufour during the 19th century, who had already created several architectural works in Genoa and Liguria. During the construction, a first wooden group of the Madonna della Guardia by the sculptor Antonio Canepa was made in 1892. Continue and learn more on Wikipedia

According to a local tradition, perhaps confirmed by a writing of the parish priest, the ancient chapel was already present in Bogliasco since 1685 along the Via Romana. The income book of the nearby confraternity of Santa Chiara cites the first registrations of offerings starting from 1657, the year of the terrible plague epidemic that struck the coastal towns and Liguria; it is therefore probable that this chapel was erected right after the plague in the seaside village. The frescoes inside the Santuario delle Grazie in Chiavari. One of the most beautiful little churches in the whole Tigullio in my opinion. It is located just above Chiavari along the Aurelia towards Rapallo. Inside are the splendid frescoes by Teramo Piaggio; more famous is the fresco of the Last Judgement by Luca Cambiaso on the counter-façade (behind this photo).

According to in-depth studies on the current structure, the various phases that led to the architectural evolution of the building followed a precise and logical choice of "aggregation", in the sense that the structure underwent various modifications over the centuries without the classic method of "superposition", a common phenomenon of other religious buildings in the Chiavari area and in the Ligurian territory, especially in the Baroque reinterpretations. The church was erected as a parish in 1315 under the rule of the Doria family. According to historical sources, the religious cult of Our Lady of Guadalupe arrived in Italy through the work of the Jesuit Fathers. Local tradition tells that in 1802 a young man from Santo Stefano d’Aveto – Antonio Domenico Rossi – a student at the Jesuit institute in Piacenza, returned to his hometown bringing with him an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe; the image was painted on a copper plate and framed in a small frame. According to local tradition, in 1478, on the site where the sanctuary stands today, there was a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary. The popular tale states that the Madonna appeared to a mute shepherd boy who, at the sight of the Lady, miraculously regained his speech and then announced the happy event to the people of Montebruno. The inhabitants who flocked to the site of the event found a wooden statue depicting the Virgin on the trunk of a beech tree; today the Marian effigy is placed on the main altar.
