Giuseppe Garibaldi square in Finalborgo

Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi a Finalborgo

Giuseppe Garibaldi square in Finalborgo.
The largest and most central square in the most beautiful village of Finale welcomes you with its beauty.
The houses, all very well kept, make you understand how the square was between the 1100s and the 1200s: all frescoed and colorful.
Truly a spectacular place in my Liguria.

The town was developed in the Finalese hinterland, not directly on the sea to be more protected against possible Saracen landings on the coast, in an easily defensible place: the confluence of the Aquila torrent with the Pora torrent, whose riverbeds form a single natural moat, later reinforced by the city walls, which defended the town on the east-south-west sides, while the northern side of the town was naturally protected by the spur of the Becchignolo hill.

The famous portico of Borgio Verezzi

Il famoso portico di Borgio Verezzi

The famous portico of Borgio Verezzi.
One of the most famous points of the splendid village of Borgio Verezzi, in the Savona area, is this beautiful stone portico that overlooks the entire western Liguria.
At the moment I took the photo, the sun was shining directly against me, so I was unable to take any photos and show you the splendid panorama that can be enjoyed from there, with the sea as the protagonist.

The little square named after Meloria in Finalborgo

Piazzetta Meloria a Finalborgo

The little square named after Meloria in Finalborgo.
One of the most beautiful villages in Italy is in the province of Savona and is called Finalborgo (a hamlet of Finale Ligure).
This is one of the many little squares in the town but the peculiarity is the undulating shape of the alley and the buildings.
I was looking for something about Meloria, to understand if it was a known name and I discovered that it is also the name of a shoal, in the sea between Liguria and Tuscany, where there was also a famous battle in 1284 in which Genoa overwhelmed Pisa.

The Battle of Meloria was a historic naval battle involving the fleet of the Republic of Genoa and that of the Maritime Republic of Pisa. The battle, which took place on August 6, 1284 off the coast of Porto Pisano, greatly weakened the Pisan naval fleet, beginning the slow decline of Pisa as a maritime power in Italy during the Middle Ages.

A glimpse of Verezzi, the famous Ligurian village

A glimpse of Verezzi, the famous Ligurian village.
After a long time that I had promised myself to visit some town of Western Liguria, some time ago I finally managed to organize a Sunday.
In addition to Finale Ligure, with friends, we went to see the small village of Verezzi (which together with Borgio create the famous town); its narrow streets, closed between the stone houses and the sea a short distance away.
Now I understand why many consider it one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
