The view of Genoa from Spianata Castelletto

Il panorama di Genova da Spianata Castelletto

The view of Genoa from Spianata Castelletto.
Genoa, with its historical and maritime charm, offers numerous panoramic points, but one of the most evocative is undoubtedly Spianata Castelletto. Located in the heart of the city, this panoramic terrace offers a breathtaking view that embraces the historic center, the port and the sea.
Spianata Castelletto, also known as Belvedere Montaldo, is a real “balcony” suspended above the historic center of Genoa. From here, visitors can admire the slate roofs of the houses, the medieval towers, the famous Lanterna and the ships that sail the port. The view is particularly fascinating at sunset, when the city is tinged with warm colors and the sea reflects the lights of the twilight.
Reaching Spianata Castelletto is simple and can be a pleasant experience in itself. You can opt for a walk through the characteristic alleys of the Castelletto district, or take the Liberty elevator from Piazza del Portello, a unique experience that offers a taste of Genoese history and culture.
Once you arrive, a stop to enjoy a Sicilian granita from the famous Gelateria Don Paolo is a must. Sitting on the benches of the esplanade, with a granita in hand, you can enjoy one of the most romantic and evocative views of the city.
Spianata Castelletto is a place that enchants both tourists and locals. It is the ideal place to take unforgettable photographs, relax and admire the beauty of Genoa from above. Whether it is a day visit or a moment of rest during a walk, this panoramic point is an unmissable stop for anyone who wants to discover the true spirit of the Superba.
If you are planning a visit to Genoa, do not forget to include Spianata Castelletto in your itinerary. The spectacular view and the relaxing atmosphere will make you fall in love with this fascinating city even more.

The roofs of the center of Genoa seen from Castelletto

I tetti del centro di Genova visti dalla Spianata Castelletto

The roofs of the center of Genoa seen from Spianata Castelletto.
Genoa, with its fascinating historic center, offers breathtaking views that enchant both residents and visitors. One of the most suggestive observation points is undoubtedly the Spianata di Castelletto. From here, you can enjoy a unique view of the roofs of the historic center, a veritable sea of red tiles interrupted by bell towers, towers and ancient buildings.
The Spianata di Castelletto, also known as “Belvedere Montaldo”, is easily accessible thanks to the Castelletto elevator, an engineering work inaugurated in 1909 that connects Piazza Portello with the esplanade. This elevator, with its elegant Art Nouveau windows, is already an attraction in itself not to be missed.
Once you reach the top, the spectacle that opens before your eyes is extraordinary. The roofs of the historic center extend as far as the eye can see, creating a mosaic of colors and shapes that tell centuries of history. Among the tiles, the bell towers of the churches emerge, such as that of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and delle Vigne, and the medieval towers, such as the Torre degli Embriaci.
The ancient port, with its docked ships, and the modern skyscrapers of Sampierdarena offer a fascinating contrast to the ancient skyline of the city. In the distance, you can see the Lanterna, the lighthouse symbol of Genoa, and, on clear days, the promontory of Portofino.
The Spianata di Castelletto is not only a place to admire the view, but also a meeting point for the Genoese. In the morning, it is frequented by children accompanied by their grandparents, while on summer evenings it becomes an ideal place to enjoy the cool air and the lights of the city. Don't forget to try a granita with cream at the Don Paolo bar, a real delight for those with a sweet tooth.
The roofs of the center of Genoa seen from Castelletto offer a unique spectacle that combines history, architecture and daily life. An unmissable experience for anyone who wants to discover the authentic heart of this wonderful city.

The view of Genoa and the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria delle Vigne

La vista su Genova e il campanile di S. Maria delle Vigne

The view of Genoa and the bell tower of S. Maria delle Vigne.
Genoa, with its unique charm and its thousand-year history, offers breathtaking views that capture the essence of the city. Among the most suggestive panoramic points, the Spianata Castelletto stands out for its beauty and historical importance.
Genoa is a vertical city, built between the sea and the hills, which offers numerous panoramic points from which to admire its beauty. The Spianata Castelletto is a balcony suspended over the historic center, from which you can enjoy a romantic view of the slate roofs, the port and the sea. This panoramic point is particularly appreciated for its ability to offer a complete and suggestive view of the city, making it an ideal place to take photographs and enjoy moments of tranquility.
The Basilica of Santa Maria delle Vigne is one of the oldest churches in Genoa, located in the Maddalena district. Built in the 10th century, the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and represents an important Marian sanctuary. The bell tower, dating back to the Romanesque period, is the only original structure that remained after the transformations that took place in the following centuries.
The church of Santa Maria delle Vigne was built on a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built in the 6th century. The bell tower, with its Romanesque structure, is a symbol of the history and spirituality of Genoa. The basilica has been expanded and renovated over the centuries, with significant interventions in the 13th and 18th centuries.
The bell tower of Santa Maria delle Vigne, with its central position and its height, offers a privileged view of the city. By climbing the tower, you can admire Genoa from above, with its narrow streets, historic buildings and the port. It is an ideal place to reflect on the history and beauty of this unique city.

The bell tower of San Lorenzo seen from Castelletto

Il campanile di San Lorenzo visto dalla spianata di Castelletto

The bell tower of San Lorenzo seen from the esplanade of Castelletto.
The city of Genoa, with its historical and architectural charm, offers numerous panoramic points from which to admire its beauties. One of the most evocative is undoubtedly the Spianata di Castelletto, a panoramic terrace that offers a breathtaking view of the city and the sea. Among the many buildings that stand out on the horizon, the majestic bell tower of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo stands out.
From the Spianata di Castelletto, the bell tower of San Lorenzo rises with its characteristic Gothic structure, characterized by horizontal black and white bands. This bell tower, an integral part of the cathedral, is one of the most significant examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. Its grandeur and elegance immediately capture the attention of anyone who happens to admire the panorama from the esplanade.
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the main Catholic place of worship in Genoa and its construction dates back to the 9th century. However, the Gothic bell tower was added only later, in the 13th century, and is a perfect example of how medieval architecture has evolved over the centuries. The black and white bands that decorate the bell tower are typical of the Genoese style and give the building a unique and recognizable look.
The Spianata di Castelletto is not only a panoramic point, but also a place of peace and tranquility where Genoese and tourists can relax and enjoy the view. The terrace is easily accessible and offers a 360-degree view of the city, allowing you to admire not only the bell tower of San Lorenzo, but also other historic buildings such as the Palazzo Ducale and the Torre Grimaldina.
Visiting the Spianata di Castelletto and admiring the bell tower of San Lorenzo is an experience that allows you to fully appreciate the beauty and history of Genoa. This panoramic point offers a unique perspective on the city and its architectural treasures, making every visit an unforgettable moment.

Here's where I took the photo from:

Saint Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of Rome, where he was martyred in 258 during the persecution ordered by the Roman Emperor Valerian in 257. The Catholic Church venerates him as a saint. Since the 4th century, Lawrence has been one of the most venerated martyrs in the Church of Rome. Constantine I was the first to build a small oratory on the site of his martyrdom. This building was enlarged and embellished by Pelagius II (579-590).

The climb to the Castelletto Esplanade in Genoa

La salita alla Spianata di Castelletto a Genova

The climb to the Spianata di Castelletto in Genoa.
In the heart of Genoa, a city with a thousand faces and a timeless historical charm, stands the Spianata di Castelletto. This enchanting place, reachable via this suggestive climb, offers not only an extraordinary view of the city, but also a historical and cultural overview that fascinates every visitor.
The Spianata di Castelletto is located on the hills surrounding the historic center of Genoa. Its history dates back to the 19th century, when it was built to connect the lower part of the city with the hills. Along the climb you can admire ancient noble residences, characteristic alleys and suggestive views that tell centuries of maritime and commercial history of the Republic of Genoa.
To reach the Spianata di Castelletto you can take the suggestive climb from Piazza Portello or Via Garibaldi, both fascinating for their architecture and atmosphere. As you climb, the stairs and alleys open up to a panoramic view, offering increasingly wider glimpses of the city and the Porto Antico, with its famous Lanterna towering over the sea.
Once you reach the Spianata di Castelletto, you find yourself in front of one of the most extraordinary panoramic points of Genoa. From here you can admire a breathtaking panorama that embraces the entire historic center, the medieval towers, the baroque domes and the modern skyscrapers that characterize the city skyline. The distant sea, the surrounding hills and the salty air make the experience even more intense and unforgettable.

One of the most evocative moments to visit the Spianata di Castelletto is at sunset, when the sun slowly sinks behind the hills, painting the sky with orange and pink hues. The daylight reflects on the sea and the city lights begin to shine, creating a magical and romantic atmosphere that makes this place perfect for an evening stroll or a dinner with a view.

If you are planning a visit to Genoa, be sure to include the climb to Spianata di Castelletto in your itinerary. It is a journey that will leave you breathless, literally and metaphorically, in front of the beauty of the Superba.

Some time ago now I was, for the first time, in the Castelletto neighborhood in Genoa.
One of the most beautiful points of the neighborhood is its viewpoint from which you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the city.
On that day, even though there was a lot of fog, I also took some photos with very beautiful colors at sunset.
