A beautiful terrace among the alleys of Padua.
Padua is a charming city located in the Veneto region, in northern Italy. Wandering through the alleys of the large historic center you can come across very beautiful buildings like the one photographed and published in this article.
Padua is one of the oldest cities in Italy, with a history dating back to the 13th century BC. Founded, according to legend, by the Trojan prince Antenor, the city played an important role during the Roman and medieval eras. In the 14th century, under the rule of the Carraresi, Padua became a significant cultural center, contributing to the Italian Renaissance.
Founded in 1222, the University of Padua is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world. Its illustrious professors and students include Galileo Galilei and Nicolaus Copernicus. The university is still a center of academic and research excellence today.
Monuments and Attractions:
– The Scrovegni Chapel: famous for its frescoes by Giotto, it is one of the masterpieces of medieval art.
– The Prato della Valle: one of the largest squares in Europe, surrounded by statues and canals.
– The Basilica of Sant’Antonio: known simply as “Il Santo”, it is an important place of pilgrimage.
– The Botanical Garden: the oldest university botanical garden in the world, founded in 1545 and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Padua is known as “the city of the three withouts”:
– The Café without doors: the Caffè Pedrocchi, once open 24 hours a day.
– The Meadow without grass: the Prato della Valle, which in the past was a marshy area.
– The Saint without a name: the Basilica of Sant’Antonio, called simply “The Saint” by the Paduans.
Today, Padua is a lively and dynamic city, with a population of over 200,000. It is an important economic and cultural center, with numerous events, festivals and a rich gastronomic scene.

The city was one of the cultural capitals of the fourteenth century, thanks to the presence of the lordship of the Carraresi or Da Carrara, who made Padua one of the main centers of pre-humanism. Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, an impressive cultural movement devoted to the ancient developed in conjunction with Florence, which would transform into the Paduan Renaissance and influence the artistic landscape of the entire northern Italy of the fifteenth century. In Padua there are two sites declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: the botanical garden, the oldest in the world, and the cycles of frescoes from the fourteenth century, preserved in eight building complexes including the Scrovegni Chapel.

The Archivolt of Via Gerolamo Boccardo in Genoa
Walking along the beautiful Via XX Settembre in Genoa, as I have already written to you many times, I almost always keep my nose in the air to enjoy all the beauty and details found there.
Just like this beautiful archivolt (or perhaps it is more of a terrace) that unites these two buildings, giving rise to the short street dedicated to an illustrious Genoese: Gerolamo Boccardo.

Here is where the archivolt is located:

Gerolamo Boccardo (Genoa, March 16, 1829 – Rome, March 20, 1904) was an Italian economist and politician. He was a senator of the Kingdom of Italy in the XIII legislature. After completing his high school studies, in 1844 he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Genoa, but the political commitments he soon took on made him delay his graduation, which he obtained only on July 2, 1849. In 1847 he was elected president of the Società Entellica di Chiavari, recently moved to Genoa. During this period he worked as a journalist at the Corriere Mercantile of Genoa, working to promote the transformation of the newspaper from an exclusively commercial newspaper to a political and economic newspaper.

The portico of via Ceccardo Roccatagliata Ceccardi in Genoa.
Every time I walk along the splendid via XX Settembre in Genoa I always walk with my nose in the air to enjoy the splendid architecture that embellishes it.
In addition to the porticos and elegant buildings, there are also several points where the side streets are covered, at the crossroads, with the continuation of the porticos.
I don't even know what to call these structures: terraces, archivolts, porticos?
This is the one from which via Ceccardo Roccatagliata Ceccardi starts and which joins up with piazza Dante.

Here's where the exact point is:

Ceccardo Roccatagliata Ceccardi (Genoa, January 6, 1871 – Genoa, August 3, 1919) was an Italian poet. He was a precursor of twentieth-century Ligurian poetry that ranges from Camillo Sbarbaro to Eugenio Montale, but in his formation there are also Carduccian residues and decadent restlessness that refer to Pascoli, D’Annunzio and the French symbolists. In his best compositions one senses a tense lyricism that calms down at times in elegant elegiac movements or in dense evocations of the Ligurian landscape.

A swallows' nest in Sestri Levante.
Every year in Sestri Levante, and always in the same places, you can see some swallows' nests.
This one, at the end of the alley, is under a terrace.
At this moment the nestling is anxiously waiting for some food. In the second photo the mother (or father) is bringing something to put under their beak.

Most swallows are insectivorous and catch insects in flight. The composition of their insect diet varies depending on the species and the time of year. Some species may be selective and not catch every insect they encounter in flight, preferring larger prey. They also avoid certain types of prey, especially stinging insects such as bees and wasps.

Padlocks under Juliet's terrace

Padlocks under Juliet's terrace
The new craze among lovers is to leave them in special places with the names of the two lovers written on them.
What better place than the cloister where there is the terrace of perhaps the most famous “lover” in the world: Juliet!

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare composed between 1594 and 1596, among the most famous and performed, as well as one of the most popular love stories in the world. The story of the two protagonists has taken on a symbolic value over time, becoming the archetype of perfect love, but opposed by society. There are countless musical and cinematic adaptations.

Neptune on a terrace in Via Maria Teresa

La statua di Nettuno in via Maria Teresa a Sestri

The statue of Neptune on a terrace in via Maria Teresa in Sestri Levante.
This statue is the one that in my opinion captures the gaze of all those who pass by via Maria Teresa in Sestri Levante.
It represents the god Neptune pointing his finger at something (it is up to the viewer to imagine where).

La statua di Nettuno in via Maria Teresa a Sestri

Neptune (Latin: Neptūnus) is a deity of Roman religion, god of water and currents, and later became, after 399 BC, the god of the sea and tidal waves, becoming the equivalent of the Greek god Poseidon. Despite the fact that his cult developed after his association with Poseidon, Neptune was always less popular among sailors than Poseidon was among the Greeks.
