La Abbazia di Santo Stefano a Genova.
Questa chiesa è nel cuore della Genova laboriosa; in pieno centro sopra a via XX Settembre.
E’ sufficiente, all’altezza del Ponte Monumentale, salire qualche gradino e si arriva su questa terrazza con da un lato la splendida chiesa e dall’altro i bei palazzi nobiliari di via Venti.

The church of Santo Stefano (or abbey of Santo Stefano) is one of the most famous Christian places of worship in Genoa, and its parish community is part of the Vicariate of Carignano – Foce of the archdiocese of Genoa. Situated on a hill overlooking the central Via XX Settembre, it was one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in the Ligurian capital. Christopher Columbus was baptized in this church and it is believed that the young Balilla was also baptized.

Via Venti Settembre in Genoa is the most elegant and famous street of the Ligurian capital.
In addition to the noble buildings, the splendid porticos in the typical Ligurian style black and white in stone and marble.

Another splendid stately building in the very central Via Venti Settembre (XX Settembre) in Genoa.
Unfortunately I can't tell you much about these buildings which certainly have a history behind them.

Porticoes of Via Venti Settembre.

A building on Via Venti Settembre in Genoa.
Another photo of Genoa and a beautiful building on Via Venti Settembre taken a few weeks ago while I was still at home..
The peculiarity here are the statues that support the buttresses of the facade.

I portici di via XX.
Genova, oltre ai famosi vicoli, ha una delle vie piu’ belle per fare una passeggiata. Si trova proprio in centro e si chiama via Venti Settembre.
I portici sono, in alcuni punti, veramente suggestivi. In questo punto, ad esempio, da un lato c’e’ il contrasto tra i marmi bianchi e verdi (tipici della Liguria) e dall’altro uno splendido palazzo “nobiliare”.
Tutto proprio in centro, a pochi metri da piazza De Ferrari.

The motto of Genoa in via XX Settembre.
Walking along via XX Settembre in Genoa I came across this Latin inscription, located above one of the many marble vaults.
Griphus ut has angit, sic hostes Ianua frangit. Translation: As the griffin claws these, so Genoa destroys its enemies.
Searching the internet for the meaning of the inscription I discovered that it is one of the oldest mottos of the Superba.
There is also an effigy of the griffin clawing an eagle and a fox.

Since it intrigued me a lot, I did a deeper research and found this nice page that talks about it better: amezena.net.
Il ponte Monumentale di Genova.
Passando nella strada principale del centro di Genova, via Venti Settembre, non si puo’ non vedere il Grande ponte, detto appunto Monumentale, che piu’ o meno a meta’ incrocia la via.
Questa foto l’ho scattata un paio di settimane fa passeggiando per il centro e mi sembra un bello scatto.

Il Ponte detto Monumentale si impone sullo stesso luogo dove era la Porta dell’Arco, delle mura del XVI secolo, le cosiddette “Mura Nuove”. Il suo ruolo è, come lo era stato quello della porta dell’Arco, di collegare due sistemi di viabilità, uno inferiore (via XX Settembre), ed uno superiore (corso Podestà).
