The holes called hoyos to protect the vines in Arrecife.
Arrecife, located on the volcanic island of Lanzarote, is famous not only for its breathtaking landscapes, but also for its innovative viticulture techniques. In this region, the vines are protected by unique structures that help them thrive in an otherwise hostile environment.
Lanzarote is characterized by permeable volcanic soil and an arid climate, with very low annual rainfall and strong trade winds. These conditions make growing vines particularly difficult. However, local winemakers have developed ingenious techniques to overcome these challenges.
Vines in Arrecife are often planted in deep holes called “hoyos”. These holes, which are circular or amphitheater-shaped, help collect morning moisture and protect the plants from evaporation and strong winds. In addition, stone walls, known as “socos”, are built around the vines, which provide additional protection against the wind and help maintain the ideal microclimate for the plants to grow.
These cultivation techniques not only ensure the survival of the vines, but also create a unique and fascinating landscape. The vineyards of Lanzarote, with their holes and stone walls, are an example of how human ingenuity can transform a hostile environment into fertile and productive land.
The heroic viticulture of Lanzarote was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2019, a testament to the exceptional value of these agricultural practices. Visiting Arrecife and its vineyards offers a unique opportunity to discover a way of growing vines that is as fascinating as it is effective.
If you are a wine enthusiast or simply curious to discover innovative agricultural techniques, a visit to Arrecife is an experience you cannot miss. Here, tradition combines with innovation to create wines of the highest quality in a landscape unique in the world.

The view of the Basilica dei Fieschi and its vineyards in Cogorno.
The beautiful basilica commissioned by the important Fieschi family that dominates the entire territory of Cogorno surrounded by beautiful vineyards (which I suppose once) belonging to the basilica.
