Chiavari Beach by the Ligurian Sea

Chiavari Beach by the Ligurian Sea.
The sea looked particularly inviting that day, and looking back at these photographs brings me straight to that walk along the coast, between the water, rocks and breakwaters protecting this part of Chiavari.
A few days earlier I had already photographed the beach in front of the former Fara Colony, and this time I continued a little farther west along the coast. I stopped to photograph another section of Chiavari’s shoreline, a place that may not immediately come to mind when thinking about the famous beaches of Liguria, but one that I find interesting precisely because it is part of the everyday life of the town.
Chiavari is in Liguria, in the Metropolitan City of Genoa, on the Gulf of Tigullio between Lavagna and Zoagli. The coastline here has a particular character: the beaches are closely connected to the urban area, with the seafront, rocks and coastal structures all appearing within the same landscape.
What caught my attention that day was mainly the water. Despite the presence of breakwaters and rock barriers, the sea looked particularly pleasant, and that became the main subject of the photographs. These structures may interrupt the natural line of the coast, but they are also part of Chiavari’s relationship with the sea.

The beaches of Chiavari

When people search for Chiavari Beach, it is worth remembering that the town’s coastline is not just one single beach. There are several different sections, with different characteristics and access points, and my photograph represents only one part of this larger coastal landscape.
Among the city’s free beaches are Marina Giulia and Spiaggia dei Velieri. The Municipality of Chiavari identifies Marina Giulia in the western area near the Rupinaro stream and Spiaggia dei Velieri in the Gli Scogli area along corso Valparaiso.
For the 2026 summer season, the municipality also introduced a rental service for umbrellas, sun loungers and director’s chairs at these two free beaches. The service runs from June 8 to September 13, from 9 am to 7 pm, with a daily charge of five euros for each item. Since this is a seasonal service, anyone planning a future visit should check the official Municipality of Chiavari page for updated information.
For me, however, the coastline is still best understood through photographs and through the small changes that appear as you walk from one section to another.

The sea and breakwaters of Chiavari

One of the details I was unsure about while taking these photographs was the presence of the breakwaters and rock barriers. From a photographic point of view they can interrupt the natural line of the coast, but at the same time they are part of the landscape and show how closely the town has adapted to the sea.
That day the water was simply too pleasant to ignore, so I decided to make it the main element of the photograph. Looking at the image now, the breakwaters become almost secondary to the surface of the sea.
This is also why I do not see this simply as a photograph of a beach. What interests me is the way Chiavari meets the sea and how the landscape changes as the seafront, rocks and different access points come into view.
Walking along the coast, the perspective changes surprisingly quickly. One photograph may be mostly about the water, another about the buildings behind the seafront, and another about the rocks or the coastal structures. For a photographer, that means there is always another composition only a short walk away.

Parking near the beach in Chiavari

For anyone arriving in Chiavari by car, parking is something worth considering before heading towards the coast. The municipality manages paid parking through Marina Chiavari and provides official information about the available payment methods for the blue parking spaces.
The current information is available on the Municipality of Chiavari’s official Mobility and Parking page. I prefer linking to this source rather than giving fixed prices or parking advice that could become outdated.
There is no single parking area that I would describe as the perfect solution for everyone. It depends on which part of the shoreline you want to reach and on the situation when you arrive.
When I am visiting a place to take photographs, I often prefer leaving the car behind and continuing on foot. In Chiavari this makes particular sense because walking along the seafront allows you to discover different views instead of searching immediately for one specific viewpoint.

A beach worth discovering on foot

What I like about this part of Chiavari is the way the beach remains connected to the town. The coastline is not an isolated strip of sand or pebbles; it alternates with the seafront, rocks and the other structures that form the urban edge of the sea.
If you are visiting Chiavari and wondering what to see along the waterfront, I would not focus only on the beach itself. Walking along the coast gives you a better sense of how the shoreline is shaped and how closely the town lives alongside the water.
The area is also changing. In February 2026, the Municipality announced approval of a project concerning the redevelopment of the Via Preli area, including a public-use area and the continuation of the seafront promenade. This concerns the future of the waterfront and should not be confused with what appears in my 2018 photograph, but it is an interesting reminder that the relationship between Chiavari and the sea continues to evolve. The details are available on the official municipal page about the continuation of the seafront promenade.
This photograph, however, remains connected to that particular moment. I was there with my camera, looking for a few more images after photographing the beach in front of the Fara Colony. I like returning to these older photographs because even when a place has not completely changed, the way we remember it through an image can be quite different.
Looking at Chiavari’s sea through these photographs, I think that is where its interest lies. You do not need a huge sandy beach or a spectacular panorama to find something worth photographing. Sometimes the water, rocks, promenade and town are enough.
