Colourful Houses in Sestri Levante’s Bay of Silence

Case in Baia del Silenzio il 5 settembre 2019

Colourful Houses in Sestri Levante’s Bay of Silence.
The colourful houses of the Bay of Silence are among the most recognisable sights in Sestri Levante, a beautiful seaside town in Liguria, Italy. Standing right beside the beach and the sea, their warm pastel façades create a distinctive atmosphere that makes this small bay so special and memorable for visitors.
The building in this photograph is one of the many houses overlooking the bay. It is more than just an attractive colourful façade: it is also a small reminder of the history of this corner of Sestri Levante. In the past, many of these homes belonged to fishing families. For those residents, the sea was not simply a beautiful view from the window. It was where they worked every day and an essential part of their family life.
The position of the houses tells much of that story. They stand close together, facing the beach and the water, creating a particularly close relationship between the buildings and the shoreline. For people who made their living from fishing, living near the boats and the beach was a practical choice. The bay was a workplace, a meeting place and part of everyday life, long before it became one of the most photographed destinations on the Ligurian Riviera.
Life here has changed considerably over the years. Many of the old fishermen’s homes are now second homes, used mainly during holidays and the busiest tourist periods. The Bay of Silence is known far beyond Liguria and attracts visitors from Italy and abroad, especially during the summer. Even so, despite these changes in how the buildings are used, the houses have retained much of their original charm.
I find this contrast particularly interesting. On one side there is the memory of an old fishing village, where daily life revolved around the sea. On the other, there is a popular holiday destination, visited by people who come to enjoy the beach, take photographs or simply admire the scenery. The colourful façades provide a setting for both worlds and seem to preserve a connection with the past, even when the buildings themselves now serve a different purpose.
The Bay of Silence, historically also known as Portobello, is one of the two beautiful bays that define the coastline of Sestri Levante. The other is the nearby Bay of Fables. The sheltered shape of the bay, its beach and the houses surrounding the shoreline combine to create a distinctive landscape. It is easy to understand why this place has become one of the town’s best-known landmarks and an essential stop for anyone visiting Sestri Levante.
I took this photograph on September 5, 2019, at the beginning of September, when summer is not quite over but the atmosphere of the seaside town begins to change. It is a time of year I particularly enjoy. The days are still bright, the sea often retains its summer colours and, after the busiest weeks of August, the bay can feel a little more peaceful.
I like to pay attention to architectural details like this because they tell a quieter story than the major tourist attractions. An ordinary house, with its windows, shutters and colourful façade, can become a symbol of the place where it stands. In the Bay of Silence, every building contributes to the view, and together they create a harmonious scene that changes with the light and the seasons.

And what about you? When you walk around the Bay of Silence, do you take time to admire the individual colourful houses, or do you prefer to enjoy the whole panorama? Add a comment or go to the bottom of the site to read what other visitors have written.

The Bay of Silence on May 20, 2016

Baia del Silenzio il 20 maggio 2016

The Bay of Silence on May 20, 2016.
It was a beautiful spring morning in Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy, with the sunshine lighting up one of the most picturesque bays on the Italian Riviera. It was Friday, May 20, 2016, and when I found myself in front of this wonderful view, I could not resist taking a photograph. The Bay of Silence, also known as Portobello, looked particularly bright and inviting, with the sea creating the perfect setting for a quiet moment and a little time spent enjoying the scenery.
I took this photograph that very morning and later edited it using HDR, or High Dynamic Range, a technique that helps bring out details in both bright and shadowed areas of an image. The result is a photograph with vivid colours, in which the blue sky, the sea and the colourful buildings come together beautifully. I enjoy using this technique when I want to emphasise the colours and details of a landscape, especially when the natural light already provides such a lovely starting point.
The Bay of Silence is one of the best-known places in Sestri Levante, a seaside town whose charm is closely connected to its unusual geography. The historic centre stands on a narrow strip of land that links the mainland to a small peninsula known as the Island. This stretch of land separates two very different bays: the larger Bay of Fables and the smaller, more intimate Bay of Silence. One side is associated with the harbour and its maritime activities, while the other offers a sheltered beach surrounded by colourful houses that seem to reach almost to the water’s edge.
The name Bay of Silence has an interesting story behind it. It was the local poet Giovanni Descalzo who first used this evocative name in 1919, helping to give one of the town’s most beautiful views an identity of its own. The older name, Portobello, has never completely disappeared and is still commonly used by local residents to refer to the bay and its surrounding area.
What makes this place so special is the relationship between the village and the sea. The pastel-coloured houses, with their green shutters and adjoining facades, seem almost to rest directly on the beach. Fishing boats, sand and water that changes colour with the light complete a view that is difficult to get tired of. Even if I have seen this place many times, there is always something worth photographing: a reflection, a boat pulled up on the shore, an open window or simply the changing colours of the sky.
On a morning like that of May 20, the bay shows one of its most attractive sides. Spring is a wonderful season for photographing places like this. The days are already bright, temperatures are pleasant and it is often possible to enjoy the scenery without the crowds that arrive during the summer months. Sestri Levante still has a more relaxed rhythm at this time of year, making it easier to appreciate the details of its historic centre and its beautiful coastline.
This photograph is also a little reminder of a morning that left me with a very pleasant feeling. It was Friday, and along with the satisfaction of having taken a photograph I liked, there was the simple pleasure of approaching the weekend with such beautiful weather. That was why I wanted to share the image and wish everyone a good weekend, hoping that the sunshine would stay with us for the following days.

And what about you? Do you prefer the Bay of Silence on peaceful spring mornings, or during the summer when the beach is full of life? Add a comment or go to the bottom of the site to read what other visitors have written.

A Flowering Agave by the Sea in Sestri Levante

Agave sul mare

A Flowering Agave by the Sea in Sestri Levante.
Sometimes, the smallest details can make a beautiful landscape even more interesting. This flowering agave growing on the rocky wall above the Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante, on the Ligurian coast of north-western Italy, caught my attention because of its position overlooking the sea. I particularly liked the contrast between the flower rising above the rocks and the waves moving below it.
The Bay of Silence is one of the most recognisable places in Sestri Levante. Its sandy beach, colourful buildings and sheltered curve of coastline attract visitors throughout the year. Many people come here to enjoy the view, walk along the waterfront or take photographs of the picturesque old town. Yet there is more to this corner of Liguria than its famous panorama. Looking carefully at the rocky edges of the bay can reveal small natural details that are easy to miss when admiring the scenery as a whole.
Agaves are remarkable plants, well adapted to challenging environments. Their sturdy leaves help them cope with dry conditions, while their impressive flower stalks can rise well above the surrounding vegetation. Flowering is a distinctive stage in the life of many agave species and, depending on the species, may occur only after many years of growth. Some agaves die after flowering, while others can follow different growth patterns.
What makes this scene special to me is the relationship between the plant and the water beneath it. The agave seems to emerge from the rocky coastline, while the sea provides a constantly changing background. The flower brings an element of stillness to the composition, contrasting with the movement and energy of the waves. It is a simple combination, but one that gives the photograph its character.
When I take photographs around Sestri Levante, I enjoy looking beyond the best-known views. The Bay of Silence offers endless opportunities for pictures, from colourful façades and boats to the changing light on the water. Sometimes, however, a plant growing in an unexpected place becomes the subject that catches my eye. These small discoveries are part of the pleasure of walking around a familiar town and seeing it from a slightly different perspective.
I wanted to capture this agave because its position above the sea made it stand out from the surrounding landscape. It is a reminder that coastal beauty can be found not only in sweeping views, but also in the meeting of plants, rocks and waves.

The Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante

Baia del Silenzio di Sestri Levante quasi deserta, con il bagnasciuga e il mare dai colori tenui

The Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante.
These days, the Bay of Silence has exactly the kind of atmosphere I enjoy photographing: an almost empty shoreline, the sea stretching out in front of the beach, and one of Sestri Levante’s best-known views suddenly feeling much more private.
The Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy, is one of those places that can look completely different depending on when you see it. During the busiest months, the bay is naturally associated with people, boats and beach life. At other times of the year, the atmosphere becomes quieter and the relationship between the water, the beach and the buildings becomes much easier to notice.
That quieter version of the bay is what I wanted to capture here. On days like the one in this photograph, it is possible to walk along the shoreline without meeting almost anyone. Whether the sky is clear or covered by clouds, the beach offers a simple way of experiencing Sestri Levante from a different perspective.
If you are wondering what to see in Sestri Levante, the Bay of Silence is naturally one of the first places that comes to mind. It is one of the symbols of the town and one of the Ligurian views I have photographed many times. Still, I rarely feel that I am photographing exactly the same scene twice. The bay changes constantly, and even a familiar composition can feel different from one visit to another.
There is also a photographic technique behind this particular image that I wanted to keep as part of the story. I took three photographs with different exposures and then combined them by overlapping the images. What I liked most about the result was the softness of the colors. Instead of producing a strongly contrasted image, the different exposures helped me achieve a gentler rendering that suited the quiet feeling of the beach.
For me, the technique remains secondary to the place itself. I used it because it helped me preserve something about the scene that caught my attention at that moment. The Bay of Silence is such a recognizable subject that it can be tempting to photograph it only in its most familiar form. I prefer returning to it under different conditions and seeing what changes.
The bay is also known as Portobello Bay, a name that belongs to the local history of the place. The more familiar name, Bay of Silence, has become strongly associated with the peaceful character that the beach can have when it is quiet. It is a small detail, but it adds another layer to a place that is already closely connected with the identity of Sestri Levante.
I have photographed the Bay of Silence from several viewpoints and at different times, and there are already other posts on the blog dedicated to it, including photographs from February 2024 and other winter views. This image naturally belongs to that collection, although I particularly like this one because of the muted colors produced by combining the three exposures.
What keeps me interested in photographing the same place is precisely the fact that it never stays identical. Clouds change the appearance of the sky, the sea is never quite the same, and the number of people on the beach can completely alter the feeling of the scene. Sometimes the bay is full of movement; at other times it seems almost suspended.
For anyone looking for photographs of the Bay of Silence or deciding what to see in Sestri Levante, this is one of the views I consider particularly representative, not because it is the busiest or most dramatic version of the bay, but because it shows a quieter side of a very familiar place.

Do you know the Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante, and have you ever seen it this quiet? Add a comment or go to the bottom of the site to read what other visitors have written.

Sestri Levante’s Bay of Silence in May

La Baia del Silenzio di Sestri Levante il 4 maggio 2023

Sestri Levante’s Bay of Silence in May.
On May 4, 2023, I photographed the bay while the summer season was still some time away, with only a few people on the beach and the sea taking up much of the scene.
When I think about what to see in Sestri Levante, the Bay of Silence is naturally one of the first places that comes to mind. In this photograph, however, I was mainly interested in capturing the bay during a quieter moment, before the arrival of summer completely changed the rhythm of the beach.
It was May 4, and the town had not yet taken on its full summer character. The beach still had plenty of open space, allowing the relationship between the houses, the coastline and the water to stand out more clearly.
I took this photograph myself during one of my walks around Sestri Levante. This is the kind of image I like to keep over time: not simply a photograph of a famous place, but a photograph of that place on a particular day, with the atmosphere and level of activity that made it different from the same view in the middle of summer.
The Bay of Silence is one of the best-known landmarks of Sestri Levante, in Liguria, Italy. It lies on the eastern side of the peninsula that separates it from the nearby Bay of Fables. The two bays are very close to each other, yet their character is quite different, and together they form an important part of the town’s coastal landscape.
What caught my attention that day was the feeling of space. With relatively few people around, the beach seemed much wider and the sea played an even stronger role in the composition. That kind of quietness naturally becomes harder to find during the busiest months.
If you are wondering where to see the Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante, the historic centre leads naturally towards this stretch of coastline. But for me, the interesting part is not simply reaching the destination. I like arriving without rushing and watching the landscape change as the streets gradually open towards the water.
On May 4, 2023, the situation was still quite different from what you encounter during the busiest part of the year. The bay was not excessively crowded, and that gave me the chance to photograph it with a much calmer feeling.
The sea looked almost idyllic to me that day. I do not want to add details that the photograph itself cannot confirm, but I can remember the impression the view left on me, especially the contrast between the quiet bay and the approaching summer season.
One small curiosity about the place is that Sestri Levante is famous for its two bays, the Bay of Silence and the Bay of Fables. The former is more enclosed and sheltered, and over the years it has become one of the most photographed corners of the Ligurian Riviera.
For me, the date is also part of the story behind this image. Knowing that it was taken on May 4, 2023 turns the photograph into a small record of a particular moment in the year, when the town was still somewhere between spring and the busier summer season.
This is something I often notice in the photographs I take around my own Sestri Levante. In other posts I have shown streets, corners of the historic centre and different views of the coastline, but every image changes when the moment of the photograph changes.
Even a place as familiar as the Bay of Silence can therefore offer a different picture. Returning in another month, on another day, or simply at a quieter time can reveal details that are easy to miss when the beach is busy.
Looking at this photograph now, I like remembering Sestri Levante in that relatively peaceful period, with summer not yet in full swing and the Bay of Silence showing a quieter side of itself.

The Bay of Silence on November 22, 2021

La Baia del Silenzio a Sestri Levante fotografata il 22 novembre 2021, uno dei miei soggetti preferiti

The Bay of Silence on November 22, 2021.
Whenever I am in Sestri Levante, I still find myself looking towards the Bay of Silence, and photographing this familiar stretch of coast never seems to lose its appeal. It remains my favourite subject, even though in recent times I have spent much more time photographing other places and, if you have been following the blog, you may also have noticed that I have published fewer food photographs than before.
I took this picture on November 22, 2021, and I like coming back to it because there is something simple about the image. There is no need to find a completely new composition every time or to look for an unusual subject. Sometimes photographing the same place is simply a way of preserving one particular moment and keeping its memory alive.
When I am standing in front of the bay, reaching for my camera almost happens naturally. I know this part of Sestri Levante very well, but that familiarity actually makes me look at it more carefully. A different season, a different day or even a slightly changed viewpoint can make the same landscape feel like a new photograph.
If you are wondering what to see in Sestri Levante, the Bay of Silence is naturally one of the town’s most recognizable places. It lies on the peninsula of Sestri Levante, between the headland and the historic centre, and has become one of the best-known views of the Ligurian coast. For me, though, it is not simply a place to show someone visiting for the first time. It is a place I have continued to return to for many years.
There is a small curiosity in its name. The expression “Bay of Silence” sounds particularly peaceful, while during the busiest periods the beach and the surrounding streets can be anything but quiet. The name has nevertheless become an essential part of the identity of this corner of Sestri Levante.
What matters most to me, however, is still the photograph itself. I do not want every image of the bay to become a tourist description, because after so many photographs it would be difficult to say something genuinely new each time. I would rather talk about my personal connection with the landscape and about why I continue to photograph it.
Recently I have published many images from journeys, cities, villages and places far from home. I have also photographed more monuments and architectural details, while food has appeared a little less often on the blog. Yet among all these different subjects, the Bay of Silence continues to return.
Perhaps that is because a familiar place never really feels completely finished. The more often I see it, the more I notice small changes that can suggest another photograph. A place can remain familiar while still offering something different to the camera.
This photograph from November 22, 2021 is therefore also part of my personal memory of the blog. Looking at it today, I do not see only the bay in the frame. I also think about all the other times I have walked through Sestri Levante with my camera and stopped in this same area.
That is what makes certain places different. They become a thread running through the years, appearing again among photographs of completely different subjects. I have often photographed Sestri Levante from different viewpoints, just as I have done with many of the smaller corners and details around town.
If you are visiting the Ligurian coast and wondering what makes this place worth seeing, I think part of the answer is precisely this familiarity. The Bay of Silence is recognizable at first glance, but it can still change enough to make you want to look again.
And after all these photographs, I still find myself wanting to stop in front of the bay and try to capture it once more.

Is there a place you could keep photographing even after seeing it hundreds of times? Add a comment or go to the bottom of the site to read what other visitors have written.

Spring views of Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante

Baia del Silenzio a Sestri Levante in primavera con case colorate e scorcio sul mare

Spring views of Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante.
Every time I photograph Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy, I find myself in front of one of the places I most enjoy capturing with my camera. This photograph was taken on May 21, during a spring day when the colors of the bay and the peaceful atmosphere of the place made this familiar view even more enjoyable to photograph.
Bay of Silence, also known as Portobello, is one of the most recognizable corners of Sestri Levante. It is not the first time I have shared a photograph of this place, and it probably will not be the last, because living close to such a unique location naturally means returning to it again and again with curiosity and a camera.
I took this image because spring gives the bay a special character. There does not always need to be a particular event or a perfect moment to create an interesting photograph. Sometimes a pleasant day is enough to transform an everyday scene into something worth remembering. The colorful houses facing the water, the sheltered shape of the bay, and the connection between the village and the sea are details that continue to attract my attention.
If you are visiting Sestri Levante and looking for places worth seeing, Bay of Silence is certainly one of the most interesting spots to discover. Its appeal is not only connected to its beauty but also to the way it changes throughout the year, offering different moods and photographic opportunities in every season.
A small curiosity is the name Portobello, which has traditionally been associated with this area, while the name Bay of Silence became the one that best describes the quiet and intimate character of this part of town.
This photograph naturally connects with other stories I have shared about Sestri Levante, including images of the old town streets, the carruggio, and the less-known corners of my hometown. Even when I travel and photograph distant places, I always return here because Sestri remains the place I know best and the one I most enjoy sharing.
Some places can be photographed many times and still reveal something new.

Portobello on Easter Monday by the sea

Portobello on Easter Monday by the sea.
Even without a perfect sunny day, the Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante keeps its charm and remains one of the most recognizable views of Liguria. This photograph of Portobello on Easter Monday was taken in 2016, during a walk along the coast where the colourful houses, the small beach and the calm sea created a quieter atmosphere than usual.
Easter Monday is traditionally a day for outdoor trips and short journeys, but the weather does not always follow our plans. That day in Sestri Levante was not one of the brightest, yet the softer atmosphere gave the photograph a different character. Sometimes a less perfect sky helps reveal another side of a place, making it feel more authentic and peaceful.
I took this photograph myself during a walk around Portobello, in the famous Bay of Silence, trying to capture not only the view but also the feeling of being there. The beauty of this place does not depend only on summer colours or clear skies. The relationship between the buildings, the beach and the protected shape of the bay creates a unique atmosphere throughout the year.
The Bay of Silence is located in Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Genoa, and it is one of the most photographed places on the Ligurian Riviera. Portobello is the name commonly associated with this beautiful waterfront area, which has become one of the main places worth seeing in Sestri Levante.
One interesting detail about the Bay of Silence is its name, which reflects the quiet and sheltered character of this small inlet. It offers a different experience compared with the more open Bay of Fables, located on the opposite side of the Sestri Levante peninsula.
On my blog I have shared other photographs of Sestri Levante and the Ligurian coast, because this area always offers new perspectives depending on the season, the light and the weather conditions. As with many other seaside images I have published, this photograph shows that atmosphere is often as important as the view itself.
This image of Portobello on Easter Monday 2016 represents a simple memory: a walk by the sea, a familiar place and the discovery that some locations keep their beauty even when the conditions are not perfect.

Marconi Tower in Sestri Levante from Silence Bay

Torre Marconi a Sestri Levante vista dalla Baia del Silenzio con la penisola e il mare sullo sfondo.

Marconi Tower in Sestri Levante from Silence Bay.
Walking along the path connecting Silence Bay to the Cappuccini area, I photographed one of the most curious landmarks of the Sestri Levante peninsula, a tower that often remains unnoticed compared with the town’s most famous views.
Marconi Tower in Sestri Levante is one of those places that many visitors can see without knowing its real story. From Portobello beach and from the paths climbing the peninsula, its position becomes visible among the greenery overlooking the sea. This combination of nature, coastline and history is what made me stop and capture this particular view.
I took this photograph from the road that leads from Silence Bay towards Cappuccini, a route that offers several interesting viewpoints over the peninsula of Sestri Levante. Instead of focusing on the classic postcard view of the bay, I preferred to tell the story of a less obvious element, a structure that is part of the landscape but often receives little attention.
Marconi Tower is located in Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy, on the top of the peninsula separating Silence Bay from Fairy Tale Bay. It is connected to Guglielmo Marconi, who carried out some of his wireless communication experiments in this area, taking advantage of the coastal position.
One small curiosity about the tower is its location: being placed high on the peninsula was important because it offered a wide view over the sea, a useful condition for the early experiments involving radio transmissions.
I enjoy photographing places like this because they show a different side of Sestri Levante, beyond the famous beaches and colorful buildings facing the water. Behind every well-known view there are smaller details that add depth and meaning to the story of a place.
In other articles about Sestri Levante, I have also tried to capture these less obvious details, from historic streets to panoramic paths, because I believe that the quieter corners often reveal the true character of a destination.
This photograph was born from the desire to preserve a landscape element that many people may see without knowing what it represents, turning a simple view of Silence Bay into a small story of history and territory.

Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante on August 27, 2018

Baia del Silenzio a Sestri Levante vista dal muretto verso il convento dei Cappuccini

Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante on August 27, 2018.
Looking at the Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante, I stopped once again in front of a view that manages to be beautiful from every direction. Among the things to see in Sestri Levante, the Bay of Silence is certainly one of the most photographed places in Liguria, but every viewpoint reveals a different detail.
This photograph was taken on August 27, 2018, during a walk towards the Capuchin convent, one of my favorite places to observe the bay from above. In the foreground, I wanted to keep the stone wall that follows the path, with its small rusty metal spikes creating a contrast with the calm sea and the colorful houses facing the water.
I was in Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy, and what caught my attention most was the contrast between completely different elements: the peaceful atmosphere of the Bay of Silence and a small detail marked by time and weather. Sometimes these imperfections are what make a photograph more interesting because they add a personal story to the image.
I have shared other views of this area on the blog, including the panorama of the Sestri Levante peninsula from the Punta Manara trail, because this part of Liguria always offers new perspectives. A few steps can completely change the composition, even when the landscape remains the same.
The Bay of Silence takes its name from the quiet and intimate feeling created by the beach, the surrounding houses, and the small peninsula protecting it. An interesting detail is that this location has long attracted artists and photographers because of the balance between natural scenery and historic architecture.
Looking back at this photograph after some time, I still like the relationship between beauty and imperfection. It is not only about a perfect seaside view, but also about the small signs left by everyday life.
If you are visiting Sestri Levante, this is a place worth seeing from different angles because each perspective tells a slightly different story.
