The Bay of Silence on November 20, 2015.
While I am away, I have scheduled this photograph so I can still share a little view of one of my favourite places on the Ligurian coast. It shows the Bay of Silence, also known locally as Portobello, in Sestri Levante, Italy. I took the picture on November 20, 2015, quite some time ago, but I thought it was worth bringing it back from my photographic archive for another look.
The Bay of Silence is one of the most recognisable sights in Sestri Levante, a seaside town in the Liguria region of northwestern Italy. Its colourful houses, small beach and sheltered stretch of water create a distinctive scene that attracts visitors throughout the year. During the summer, the bay becomes a lively destination for people enjoying the sea and the warm weather. In the quieter months, however, it can offer a more peaceful atmosphere and a different kind of beauty.
November brings its own character to the Ligurian coast. The light is different from the bright days of summer, the evenings arrive earlier, and the shoreline often feels more relaxed. Even without the crowds of the holiday season, Portobello remains a lovely place to stop, admire the view and appreciate the relationship between the town and the sea.
I enjoy revisiting photographs from earlier years because they bring back memories of places I have visited and moments I wanted to preserve. An image does not necessarily lose its value simply because it is no longer recent. Sometimes, looking through an old collection helps me notice details I had forgotten or reminds me why a particular location made such a strong impression in the first place.
The Bay of Silence is certainly one of those places. Its compact setting, the buildings close to the water and the curve of the shoreline give it a special identity. It is also a wonderful subject for photography, with changing light and weather creating a different mood each time you visit. If you enjoy discovering Italian seaside towns through photographs, Sestri Levante and the wider Tigullio area offer plenty of other coastal views worth exploring.
I hope you enjoy this photograph from November 20, 2015. Even though it was taken years ago, I am happy to share it today while I am away and let this familiar corner of Liguria make a brief appearance on the blog.
