Dubai’s Grand Malls and the Reality Behind Them

Architetture moderne e grandi strutture commerciali a Dubai, simboli dello sviluppo urbano e del lusso della città

Dubai’s Grand Malls and the Reality Behind Them.
Walking around Dubai, I found myself surrounded by enormous shopping centres, futuristic skyscrapers and large complexes devoted to leisure and wellbeing. The scale of these structures is striking, and many seem designed to make an impression before you even step inside. Glass surfaces, bold geometric shapes and carefully planned spaces create an urban landscape where modernity and luxury are part of the everyday scenery.
Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates, on the coast of the Persian Gulf, where contemporary architecture has transformed the skyline over recent decades. Shopping malls here are often much more than places to buy things. They can include restaurants, entertainment venues, leisure facilities and attractions that encourage visitors to spend hours inside. Around them, wide roads, modern districts and towering buildings form a cityscape that feels very different from that of many older European cities.
From a photographic point of view, I am drawn to the sheer scale of these buildings and the way they occupy the surrounding space. Their facades, reflective surfaces and strong lines create patterns that immediately catch the eye. Even without knowing the name of every building, it is possible to appreciate the relationship between the architecture, its proportions and the spaces around it. Looking up at these structures often changes the way I frame a scene, making the buildings seem even taller and more imposing.
Yet the more I look at this kind of urban landscape, the more a familiar question comes to mind: is everything really as good as it looks? Dubai’s wealth and architectural ambition are visible, but a city cannot be understood through its most impressive facades alone. Questions about sustainability, energy and water consumption, working conditions and economic inequality also form part of the wider picture. A photograph of a modern building cannot explain all these issues, but it can prompt us to think about what lies beyond the polished exterior.
One interesting feature of Dubai’s shopping culture is that some malls have become destinations in their own right. They offer entertainment, leisure activities and places to meet friends, not just retail spaces. This is quite different from the traditional idea of a shopping centre as a place to visit briefly before heading home. In Dubai, a mall can become a social destination and a comfortable place to spend time away from the outdoor heat.
These buildings also offer plenty of opportunities for photography. Repeating patterns, contrasts between solid structures and open spaces, and the reflections on glass surfaces can all create compelling compositions. I enjoy observing how a change in viewpoint can alter the impression of a building. From one angle, a structure may appear relatively ordinary; from another, its height and scale can dominate the entire frame. In architectural photography, the position of the camera can be just as important as the building itself.
Dubai’s urban development reflects a strong ambition to attract visitors, create new destinations and project an image of innovation. That ambition is part of what makes the city so visually distinctive. At the same time, it raises questions about the long-term impact of rapid construction and the resources required to maintain such an environment. I do not think admiration and criticism have to be mutually exclusive. It is possible to appreciate the design and engineering while also considering the wider consequences of the urban model.
On Lucadea.com, I often use travel photographs to record more than the appearance of a place. An image can preserve a personal impression, but it can also encourage a question that remains after the journey. As with other photographs I have shared of cities and landscapes encountered on my travels, these modern structures offer a starting point for looking at a destination from different perspectives rather than reducing it to a single image.
Dubai continues to surprise visitors through the contrast between its natural setting and the scale of its development. The surrounding desert and coastline provide a striking backdrop to the towers and enormous commercial complexes. Yet perhaps the most interesting way to experience the city is to look beyond the obvious spectacle, paying attention to how people use these spaces and what it takes to sustain them.
For me, photographing this kind of architecture is not simply about celebrating modernity or criticising luxury. It is about recording what I see and leaving room for questions. The buildings are impressive, the ambition is unmistakable, and the contrast between appearance and reality is part of what makes Dubai such a compelling subject.

When you see these huge structures in Dubai, do you think first of progress and innovation, or do you also wonder about the cost of maintaining such a luxurious urban landscape? Add a comment or go to the bottom of the site to read what other visitors have written.

The modern waterfront of Malaga in Spain

The modern waterfront of Malaga in Spain.
Although I have never actually gone ashore in this beautiful Spanish city, I have stopped there dozens of times. Some time ago I picked up my camera and, as I sometimes do, I took some photos from the ship’s upper decks.
I found a modern waterfront full of skyscrapers!

Malaga is a Spanish municipality with 579,076 inhabitants, located in the autonomous community of Andalusia, in southern Spain. Capital of the province of the same name, the city is the cultural and economic capital of the Costa del Sol. Although traces of human presence have been found in the region since prehistoric times (dolmens in Peña de los Enamorados in the municipality of Antequera, cave paintings in Benaoján, ceramics in Nerja), Malaga owes its origins to being one of the colonies founded by the Phoenicians of Tyre around the 7th century BC along the western Mediterranean.
