Chiusa Street in Sestri Levante and House of Vines.

Via della Chiusa a Sestri Levante con la Casa delle Viti e uno scorcio del centro storico della Liguria

Chiusa Street in Sestri Levante and House of Vines.
While walking through the centre of Sestri Levante, I stopped along this small pedestrian street connecting Piazza del Mercato with the caruggio, observing a quiet corner where the daily life of the town meets the charm of its historic buildings. Chiusa Street in Sestri Levante caught my attention because it is a simple passage that reveals its character slowly, through details that can easily be missed while walking.
In this photograph, I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the street rather than focus only on a single subject. The view follows the direction of the pedestrian route towards the heart of the old town, while on the right side in the foreground appears the House of Vines, one of the most photographed houses in Sestri Levante. It was not the main subject of my image, but its presence gives the scene a strong connection with this particular place and adds a recognisable element to the composition.
Chiusa Street is located in Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy, and it connects Piazza del Mercato, one of the main areas close to the town centre, with the caruggio, the traditional old street where shops and historic buildings create the atmosphere of the village. Walking through this area, I often find that the most interesting photographic moments are hidden in ordinary places rather than in the locations everyone already knows.
When searching for what to see in Sestri Levante, I believe these smaller streets offer a different way to experience the town. A narrow pedestrian road, an old façade, or a particular house can tell a story about local life and create a stronger connection with a place.
A small curiosity about the House of Vines is related to the plants that grow across its façade and give the building its name. This distinctive feature has made the house a favourite subject for photographers and visitors exploring the historic centre of Sestri Levante.
I like photographing places like this because they represent the everyday side of a destination. The beauty of a town is not only found in its most famous views but also in the small details that belong to the people who live there. A street crossed every day can become an unforgettable image when seen from a different perspective.
This photograph continues the story of my other posts about Sestri Levante, where I have often looked for less obvious corners of the town, from views around the Bay of Silence to smaller streets filled with character. Each image is a way to preserve a moment of observation and a personal connection with the places I visit.
If you are visiting Sestri Levante and looking for places worth seeing beyond the most popular viewpoints, walking through the historic centre can reveal many unexpected details. Chiusa Street is an example of how a simple route can become a meaningful photographic subject thanks to its atmosphere and architecture.
Taking this photograph was a quiet pause during my walk, a moment to appreciate the connection between old buildings, local stories, and the everyday rhythm of a Ligurian town.

The House of the Vines on Chiusa Street in Sestri

La bella Casa delle Viti in via della Chiusa a Sestri Levante

The beautiful House of the Vines on Chiusa Street in Sestri Levante.
Whenever I go into the center of Sestri Levante, I almost always pass by this house (one of the most convenient parking areas is Market Square) and, just as often, I end up photographing it.
Besides being a beautiful house, it has the distinctive feature (as the name suggests) of having a couple of grapevines that grow from the street all the way up to the roof.
Spectacular!

There are three in Sestri: one is this one, the second is in Vico del Bottone, and the third is in Vico Marina di Ponente.

The alley called Vico del Bottone in Sestri Levante

Vico del Bottone a Sestri Levante con la Casa delle Viti ricoperta da una grande pianta nel centro storico ligure

The alley called Vico del Bottone in the historic center of Sestri Levante.
In the picturesque historic center of Sestri Levante, a small and charming passage is known as Vico del Bottone. This narrow alley, rich in history and character, offers an authentic glimpse into the life and traditions of this fascinating Ligurian town.
Vico del Bottone probably owes its name to a local legend or perhaps to an old button shop that once stood here. Artisan workshops were common in the narrow alleys of Italian towns, and this small shop may have served both local residents and passing sailors. Over time, the name “Vico del Bottone” became a testament to the daily life and economic activities that once shaped Sestri Levante.
Vico del Bottone is a perfect example of traditional Ligurian architecture. Its narrow walls, pastel-colored facades, and flower-filled balconies create an intimate and welcoming atmosphere. Arches and solid wooden doors tell stories of the past, while details such as slate doorframes add a touch of romance and mystery.
Walking through Vico del Bottone, you can admire the simple yet captivating beauty of historic houses, many dating back centuries, including one in particular called Casa delle Viti, covered by an impressive vine plant (visible in the photo). The narrow alleys invite visitors to slow down and enjoy the relaxed rhythm of life in a Ligurian town.
Despite its central location, Vico del Bottone remains a place of peace and quiet. Away from the bustle of the main streets, this hidden corner offers a perfect retreat for those seeking a moment of serenity. Here, you can find a bench to sit and reflect, enjoying the beauty and calm of the alley.
Visiting Vico del Bottone is like stepping back in time. This small yet precious corner of Sestri Levante offers a unique perspective on the city’s history and daily life. It is a place where past meets present, and where every stone tells a story.
In conclusion, Vico del Bottone is one of the many hidden gems of Sestri Levante, a place worth discovering and appreciating for its beauty and timeless charm. Walking through this alley, you can breathe in the authentic Ligurian atmosphere and discover a piece of the history of this enchanting coastal town.

Bottone Alley in Sestri Levante with Casa delle Viti and its large vine-covered historic façade

Photo taken with Canon EOS RP camera and Tamron 16-300 lens.

Here’s exactly where I took the photo:

The Vine House in Bottone Alley

Casa delle Viti in Vico del Bottone a Sestri Levante con la pianta di vite sulla facciata

The Vine House in Bottone Alley.
In my hometown of Sestri Levante, there are several houses in the historic centre that stand out thanks to a very unusual feature: grapevines climbing along their façades.
This one is in Bottone Alley and is one of the three Vine Houses I have photographed in Sestri Levante. The vine gives the façade a distinctive appearance and makes the building immediately recognisable when walking through the historic lanes.
The other two are located on Chiusa Street and in Marina di Ponente Alley.
I find these houses fascinating because they are the kind of details you discover when you take the time to really observe a town. Sestri Levante is best known for its bays and sea, but the historic centre hides many small corners that are well worth photographing.
In this case, it is the vine that makes all the difference. The plant climbs along the façade and creates a beautiful contrast with the architecture of the house. Over the years, it has almost become part of the building itself.
Looking towards the upper part of the house, it is impossible not to wonder what the pergola at the top looks like. From the street you can glimpse it, but it is not easy to see exactly what is up there.
I would really love to see it from close up. Maybe one day someone who lives in the house will invite me upstairs and I will finally be able to photograph that part of the building too!
These three Vine Houses have always fascinated me for precisely this reason. They are simple subjects, part of everyday life in the historic centre, yet they have a strong personality and can turn an ordinary walk into a small photographic exploration.
Walking through Bottone Alley, this house easily catches your attention. The vine climbing along the façade creates an image that almost seems to belong to a small inland village, even though we are right in the heart of Sestri Levante.
This is one of the things I enjoy most about photographing my town: continuing to discover details even in places I have known for years. Sometimes all it takes is a different viewpoint, looking upwards or walking through a quieter alley to find something new to photograph.
And who knows, perhaps there are more Vine Houses besides these three. If you know of another one that I have not photographed yet, let me know. I would be very curious to discover it.
For now, I am happy with these three, which form a small and rather curious photographic collection from the historic centre of Sestri Levante.
