Rio de Janeiro from the Ship with Christ the Redeemer in the Distance
Rio de Janeiro seen from the ship, finally enjoying a truly summery day, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius and Christ the Redeemer visible somewhere in the background. It was the perfect kind of weather for admiring the city from the water, although spotting the famous statue in the photograph may take a little concentration!
After days when the weather had been less inviting, the sunshine and warmth made a welcome change. Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, is a city that looks wonderful from the sea: the coastline, green mountains and buildings come together to create a landscape that is instantly recognisable. The view from a ship is different from the one you get while walking through the streets or spending time on the beaches. From out on the water, the city spreads out before you, while the shape of the land draws your eyes towards the hills behind it.
And then there is Christ the Redeemer, one of Brazil’s most famous landmarks. The statue stands atop Corcovado Mountain, within Tijuca National Park, and has become one of the defining symbols of Rio de Janeiro. From the sea, however, it is not always easy to pick out immediately. Distance, sunlight and the outline of the mountains can make it surprisingly difficult to distinguish. That is part of the fun of this photograph: can you spot it in the background?
With temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius, the day certainly felt like summer. The bright sunshine brought out the colours of the landscape and made it tempting to stay on deck, watching the coastline and trying to recognise some of Rio’s best-known sights. A ship also gives you time to take in the view at a relaxed pace, allowing small details in the landscape to catch your attention. A photograph does not always need to be perfectly sharp or look like a classic postcard. Sometimes, the atmosphere of the moment is what makes it worth keeping.
That is one of the things I enjoy about travel photography: it preserves not just a place, but also the conditions in which you experienced it. Here, the intense heat, the summer light and the search for Christ the Redeemer in the distance are all part of the memory, just as much as the city itself. On Lucadea.com, I often share pictures taken during my travels, little fragments of days spent in places far from home or simply different from everyday surroundings.
Rio de Janeiro is recognisable even from a distance, thanks to its distinctive geography and the presence of the statue watching over the city from above. In this photograph, though, you may need to look carefully.
