Campo Square in Siena and its Palio
Campo Square in Siena and its Palio.
I photographed Campo Square in Siena, Tuscany, Italy, one of the city’s most famous landmarks and one of the most recognizable squares in Italy. Among the places to see in Siena, this square is certainly one of the most important, not only because of its architecture but also because of its strong connection with the Palio di Siena, the historic horse race that takes place here every year.
When you arrive in this place, it is immediately clear that it is not just a beautiful historic square, but a living space where people, stories, and traditions continue to meet. In this photograph, I tried to capture this feeling, even though unfortunately I had to leave out part of the bell tower of Torre del Mangia from the composition, one of the most recognizable elements of Siena’s skyline.
This image was taken while walking through the historic center of Siena, where every corner offers a new perspective to photograph. I wanted to capture this scene with my camera and keep the memory of one of Italy’s most famous squares, focusing on the atmosphere created by the surrounding buildings and the unique shape of the space.
Campo Square owes much of its international fame to the Palio, the traditional horse race between Siena’s contrade, held twice every year on July 2 and August 16. During the event, the entire square changes appearance, becoming a race track covered with earth and the center of the city’s celebrations. A small curiosity is that the shell-shaped pavement is divided into nine sections, a reference to the Government of the Nine that ruled Siena during the 14th century.
Located in the heart of Siena’s historic center, the square is surrounded by important medieval buildings that tell the story of the city, including Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia. The tower, rising more than one hundred meters high, remains one of the most recognizable symbols of Siena.
This photograph naturally connects with the other stories I have shared on my photoblog about Italian historic cities, where even the most famous places can reveal different details when observed carefully.
Even without the complete bell tower in the frame, I believe this image still preserves the character of a square that continues to tell centuries of history.

Piazza del Campo (or simply “il Campo”) is the main square of the city of Siena. Unique for its distinctive and highly original shell-like shape, it is renowned worldwide for its beauty and architectural integrity, as well as for being the site where the Palio di Siena takes place twice a year.
