Pollen in the air
Pollen in the air.

Pollen grains have a special wall made of sporopollenin, an extremely resistant and stable polymer that protects the pollen during its journey from the stamens to the pistil in angiosperms, or from the male cone to the female cone in gymnosperms. If the pollen falls on a compatible female pistil or cone, it germinates, producing a pollen tube that transfers the male gamete to the ovule containing the female gamete.
