It is one of four bridges, along with the Accademia Bridge, the Scalzi Bridge, and the Constitution Bridge, that span the Grand Canal in the city of Venice. Of the four, the Rialto Bridge is the oldest and certainly the most famous. According to the chronicles, the first crossing over the Grand Canal was a pontoon bridge. A real bridge, resting on wooden piles, was built by Nicolò Barattiero under the rule of Doge Sebastiano Ziani or Orio Mastropiero…
