Pescatori Square in Chiavari

Pescatori Square in Chiavari.
Although its official name is Gagliardo Square, this little square in Chiavari is widely known by locals as Pescatori Square. It is an example of how a popular name can become more familiar than the official place name, reflecting local traditions and the everyday life of the town.
The square is located on the western side of Chiavari’s seafront. For many years, it marked the end of the seaside promenade in that direction, making it a familiar stopping point for people walking along the coast. It was a place to pause during a stroll, enjoy the sea air and then head back towards the town centre.
Things have changed with the redevelopment of the Preli promenade, the coastal walkway near the former Colonia Fara. With this stretch of the waterfront improved, the square has taken on a new role. Instead of being simply the end of the walk, it has become a passageway for people continuing along the seafront. It is a welcome change, as a more continuous pedestrian route makes it easier to explore the coastline on foot.
Another positive improvement has been the decision to make the square and the adjoining street pedestrian-only. Reducing traffic in this area makes the space more pleasant to walk through and allows people to enjoy their surroundings without constantly watching out for cars. Changes like these may seem modest, but they can make a real difference to the way residents and visitors experience a town.
When I photograph Chiavari, I like to pay attention to these everyday places as well as to the town’s best-known views. A small square or a simple stretch of pavement can tell an interesting story about how a place evolves. The waterfront is not only somewhere to admire the sea; it is also part of the town’s public life, where people walk, meet and spend time outdoors.
Pescatori Square is a good example of how a familiar urban space can gain a new purpose when pedestrian routes are improved. The renewed connection with the Preli promenade gives walkers another reason to explore this part of the Chiavari coastline. I appreciate projects that make public spaces more accessible and inviting, particularly in seaside towns where walking beside the water is such an important part of local life.
Chiavari has plenty of places worth discovering, from its historic centre and arcades to its seafront and coastal paths. This little square is one of those details that might be overlooked on a quick visit, but it helps tell the story of how the town is changing.

I also have a nice video of the new walk in Chiavari that starts right from the Fishermen’s Square:
