A Tuna Sandwich in Barbados.
When I think of Barbados and the Caribbean, I usually picture tropical beaches, palm trees, turquoise water and food inspired by local traditions. During one of my visits to the island, however, I came across something much more international: a tuna sandwich that looked so appealing that I wanted to photograph it before taking the first bite.
It may not be one of the island’s best-known traditional dishes, but the presentation was excellent. The sandwich came with French fries, vegetables and a side salad, arranged in a colourful and appetising way. It is a simple meal, yet the combination of different textures and colours made the plate look especially inviting. Sometimes, a familiar dish served with care can become a memorable part of a trip.
Barbados has a rich food culture shaped by a variety of influences, including African, Caribbean and European traditions. Local specialities include cou-cou with flying fish, fish cakes and other dishes that make use of the island’s seafood and produce. The official Visit Barbados guide to local cuisine offers an introduction to these flavours and explains the importance of fish in Barbadian cooking. A tuna sandwich with fries and salad belongs to a more international style of dining, but that does not make it any less enjoyable.
When travelling, especially when my schedule is shaped by time aboard a ship, I often appreciate a meal that is convenient, satisfying and nicely presented. There is not always time to sit down for a long lunch or search for a traditional restaurant. A straightforward dish like this can be just what I need during a break between exploring the island and returning to the ship.
The photograph accompanying this article captures a small moment from my travels in Barbados. I enjoy documenting food as well as landscapes and landmarks because eating is part of the experience of discovering a place. A meal can tell its own story through the way it is served, the ingredients on the plate and the setting in which it is enjoyed.
The fries add a crisp and familiar side to the sandwich, while the vegetables and salad bring freshness and colour to the presentation. Together, they make a balanced-looking plate that is both casual and appealing. And, as I discovered when I tasted it, the meal was good too. A beautiful presentation is always welcome, but it is even better when the food lives up to its appearance.
Of course, when visiting Barbados, there are plenty of opportunities to explore local dishes and discover the island’s culinary traditions. But not every meal during a journey needs to be an adventure in unfamiliar flavours. Sometimes, a well-made sandwich is exactly right, especially when it gives you the chance to relax and enjoy a simple pleasure.
For me, these everyday moments are part of what makes travel photography so rewarding. Alongside beaches, streets and historic places, a meal like this becomes another memory worth sharing on Lucadea.com.
