Dina Bellotti Square and the Doganieri Tower

Dina Bellotti Square and the Doganieri Tower.
Walking through the heart of Sestri Levante, Liguria, Italy, just behind the carruggio, it is still possible to discover small corners that remain hidden even for people who know the town well. This photograph shows one of the places worth seeing in Sestri Levante, a small square between Bottone Alley and Macelli Alley, with the elegant presence of the Doganieri Tower overlooking the scene.
I decided to publish this image because this time I was able to capture the entire Dina Bellotti Square with a wide-angle view that shows its shape and atmosphere more clearly. Some time ago, I was also searching online to understand exactly where this square was located and I realized how difficult it was to find information about it. For this reason, I thought it deserved a new photographic story.
I wanted to capture this view with my camera because it represents one of those places in Sestri Levante that does not need to be large to be memorable. The square is small, but it contains many details that reveal the history and character of the area: old buildings, narrow passages, and a special view towards one of the symbols of the village.
This space was dedicated to Dina Bellotti, a painter who loved spending her holidays in Sestri Levante and who developed a strong connection with the town. Her memory is preserved through this small square located in one of the most characteristic areas of the historic center.
The Doganieri Tower is certainly the element that attracts attention first. The tower, often used today for exhibitions and cultural events, is a reminder of the defensive and commercial past of the village. A curious detail is that its name refers to the customs control activities that were once connected with this area, when the relationship between the sea and the land was essential for local life.
Behind the square there are other interesting details, including one of the typical houses with vines, and a little further the beginning of the path towards Mandrella, a green area loved by those looking for a walk with views over Sestri Levante.
This photograph connects with other stories I have shared about the less-known corners of my hometown, because I believe that small hidden places often reveal the true character of a destination.

Where is this square located:

Bernardina Bianca Bellotti, known as Dina Bellotti (Alessandria, October 2, 1912 – Rome, August 29, 2003), was an Italian painter. In 1938, she exhibited her works for the first time at the Venice Biennale, a show she would attend twice more in 1940 and 1942. Her most recurring subjects were landscapes, figures, and especially portraits of children. Already in those years, the young painter spent summers with her family in Sestri Levante.
