The arcades of September 20 Street in Genoa
The arcades of September 20 Street in Genoa.
In the heart of Genoa, among the city’s best-known streets, September 20 Street offers some remarkable architectural views thanks to its elegant arcades and the details of the historic buildings surrounding it. This photograph was taken while walking through the city center, where even a busy urban street can reveal interesting perspectives worth capturing.
I wanted to photograph these arcades because they show a different side of Genoa compared with the famous caruggi of the old town. While the narrow alleys tell the story of the oldest and most intimate part of the city, this wide avenue represents another chapter of Genoa’s development, with elegant buildings, larger spaces and refined architectural details.
When searching for what to see in Genoa, visitors often think immediately of the Old Port, historic palaces or medieval streets, but a walk along September 20 Street also reveals many details that are easy to overlook. The arcades, with their decorations and materials, create a continuous sequence of perspectives while walking through the city.
In this image, what caught my attention was the contrast between the light marble and the darker stones, elements connected with Ligurian architectural traditions, together with the elegant palace overlooking the street. This combination of materials, shapes and textures is what makes even a simple urban passage an interesting photographic subject.
September 20 Street is located in Genoa, Liguria, Italy, crossing one of the most central areas of the city and reaching the area near De Ferrari Square, one of Genoa’s most important landmarks. It remains one of the main streets of the city and is constantly crossed by locals and visitors.
A curiosity about this street is that it was created between the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of a major urban transformation project. Its construction changed this area of Genoa, introducing a more modern city layout while preserving a strong connection with the local architectural style.
As I have already shared in photographs dedicated to Genoa’s hidden alleys and old streets on Lucadea.com, this image also comes from the desire to observe the city through its smaller details. Genoa can completely change its atmosphere depending on the street you choose: within a short distance you can move from a narrow medieval alley to a grand and elegant avenue.
This photograph tells exactly this balance between history and urban transformation, showing a central part of Genoa that is often crossed quickly but deserves a closer look.
