The arcades of XX September Street in Genoa

The arcades of XX September Street in Genoa.
While walking through the center of Genoa, I wanted to capture with my camera a detail of the historic arcades along XX September Street, one of the city’s most recognizable roads. This photograph focuses on a smaller architectural detail rather than a famous landmark, showing how materials, decorations and perspectives can reveal the elegance hidden in everyday urban spaces.
The arcades of XX September Street are one of the places worth seeing in Genoa for anyone who enjoys discovering the city through its architecture. Compared with the famous caruggi of the old town, this large avenue offers a different atmosphere: wider spaces, elegant buildings and decorative details that tell the story of Genoa’s urban development between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
I have always enjoyed walking along this street because, even after many visits, it is still possible to notice something new. In this photograph, I focused on the old arcades, the decorated columns and the contrast between the different stones and marble elements used in the construction.
XX September Street is located in Genoa, Liguria, Italy, crossing one of the most central areas of the city and reaching the area near De Ferrari Square. It is one of the main streets of the Ligurian capital and remains a place where locals and visitors walk every day.
A curiosity about this street is connected to its origins: it was created as part of a major urban transformation project that changed this area of Genoa. The buildings and arcades reflect the architectural taste of the period, with elegant decorations and influences typical of the early twentieth century.
For me, urban photography often starts from these simple discoveries: a decorated column, a particular stone, a detail on a façade. It is not always necessary to search for a famous monument, because even a small part of a street can tell the identity of a city. As I have already shared in photographs dedicated to Genoa’s alleys and hidden corners on Lucadea.com, this image also comes from the pleasure of observing familiar places with a curious eye.
The morning atmosphere gives this part of the city a different feeling, allowing the details of the arcades to stand out and showing a quieter side of Genoa’s daily life.
This photograph is therefore the story of a small urban fragment, a view of XX September Street that still preserves the charm of Genoese architecture and history.

Where is via XX:

Via Venti Settembre is one of the main thoroughfares in the center of Genoa, located in the San Vincenzo district, and is just under a kilometer long. It runs in an east-west direction and, along with Corso Italia – the promenade that runs along the seafront – is one of the favorite places for Genoese people to stroll. It crosses the two central districts of Portoria (the first section, with arcades, from Piazza De Ferrari to the Monumental Bridge) and San Vincenzo (from the Monumental Bridge to its intersection with Via Cadorna near Piazza della Vittoria).
